fox_forma Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Came across a little snag and would like to know how crucial this piece is. Its the sleeve type piece (dont know the actual name) that slides over the front inside bolt that the cylinders mount up to. It was bent up and I couldn't get the cylinder to sit over because it had to be perfectly round for it to slide over so I just ripped it out as it was lodged in there pretty good. Do I need to track down another one or do I not need this piece? Last in the pic you can see the studs to the right of the pic, those are apparently the studs for my cool head but they are threaded the whole way along the stud and have no gap like the stockers. Is this normal or should I try to track down new cool head studs as well. I just want to get this bike back together as it has been sitting for 3 months now but little crap keeps on popping up. Quote
EastCoast Banshee Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 (edited) Was this pin located on the jug? If so i believe its to align the cylinder correctly with the case. I honestly don't know how important it is but id say its there for a good reason. Edited January 27, 2008 by EastCoast Banshee Quote
fox_forma Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 yeah I figured it has something to do with lining up the jug with the motor but wasn't sure how important it really is. Not sure how it got bent originally but it was shot so I had to pry it out. And yes it is the piece that slides into the bottom of the cylinder. Each side has one on the inside front of each cylinder. Quote
BANKRUPT Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 its pretty important for proper alignment.... Quote
sheerider1026 Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 yes its very important, u can get them at the stealership, or at bikebandit.com. they are cheap, i would suggest get new ones, so then u have no worrys and a happy motor. Quote
fox_forma Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 whats the piece actually called so I can hit the dealer after work tomorrow? Quote
sheerider1026 Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 let me think a minute, if you go to bike bandit.com, they have it on mircofiche, i just looked it up for you and they are calling it a dowel pin, and there part number is4688-001, thats not a yamaha number but its bikebandits stock number, they are $1.06 each. i am sure the dealer will find it on there microfiche for you. brian Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 that part is very important ! it is called a dowel pin (even though it is more like a sleeve) there should be two for each cylinder !! look here follow that link. you can even get the part number and name so you can call the stealership and find out if they got it before you head on down there. just select year, then model, then cylinders, find the parts and add them to the cart, view cart and the part #s will be there. fox_forma Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 thanks for the link, the other ones are there, just the one was screwed up for some reason. I have 2 shops right by me within a 2mile radius so hopefully one of them have it but I have a feeling since its not a common part it will have to be ordered and that sucks since its on a $1 part but we'll see I guess Quote
Bobman13 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 If they have them in stock you get them right away at bikebandit.com and Yes I would get new studs you can find them here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pro-Design-...Q2em118Q2el1247 good luck Quote
fox_forma Posted January 30, 2008 Author Report Posted January 30, 2008 got the new dowel pin today at my local shop so thats a plus and the cylinders are back on and good to go. Now to the cool head studs, what is the deal with those? Are they just some studs someone seemed to buy at a hardware store since they are fully threaded and dont look a thing like the stockers? How much does that make a difference? Quote
jbooker82 Posted January 30, 2008 Report Posted January 30, 2008 If it were me I would get a set of cool head studs. Yours just look like somebody made them out of ready rod. There is orings that go on each stud. I dont imgine that they would seal real well against the threads. There it 2 longer studs that come in the kit too. They go in the front of the cylinder right above the exhaust port. josh Quote
