I am doing a top end on both my Banshees. Question is: What is difference in pistons? Cast vs. forged? big difference in pricing. Both are stock except for milled head and pipes. The engine did not seize. I sucked sand on one and the other just needs refreshed. Can I reuse the pistons and put on new rings or just go ahead and replace completely. Only do dunes riding. Do not race.

just use everything new so you dont have to come back in a later time and replace. better safe then sorry, and always use wiseco or pro-x pistons. oem is very good as well, its better to replace the piston then to find out you cracked a skirt and then have many problems. i cant remember what the difference between cat and forged i was told by my builder but forgot :geek:

cast is just that, made from two pieces of metal, forged is cut from one solid chunk.

It's all about clearances...

If the cylinder can be honed and the pistons are still within clearance specs, re ring it and be done.

If they're not within spec, get it bored and new pistons/rings....

I'd stick to Wiseco, but a few builders I'd trust have had good luck with WSM as well. Stay away from the Namura junk...

Read THIS (mostly the last half) and if I recall, your question will be answered...

Good read but still unsure. I have weiscos in the one that sucked sand. We shut it down before it had a chance to seize. On my other Shee it is still a stock bore with OEM pistons. Again I am only running milled head. But I am not on eto just cheap out. So looks like I will go with the Weiscos again. Thanks to all fo r quick response....
