I installed a pro design adjustable timing plate today on my 04 shee. I read on here that most of you with stock head aaand cylinders go to a +4. Well I have a stock head and cylinders, and i set mine at +5. my compression is 120 psi. I am running toomey T-5's, and I am running 89 octane mixed with amsoil dominator 50:1. Is setting it at +5 to much? I rode it around and it really woke it up. To me it was like a whole new quad. Any info will help alot, Thanks

with the ammount of gas a typical banshee owner goes through in a year, it makes since to use premium. the difference in cost between 97, 89 and 93 is only like 50 cents per tank of gas, so splurge and go for the premium. i only use 93 octane gas, and fresh gas at that.

over the life of youre quad you might save $5 or $10 if you used 87 or 89, but so what. the money we are talking about is peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

Ok, thanks for the info guys, I will drain the rest of it out and put in some 92. Do you guys think if i run some Amsoil Saber 100:1, if that will make any kind of difference with the advanced timing. I ran it a few months ago mixed with some VP MXRO1, before i added the timing plate and it really seemed to me to make a difference in the power area. When it was on the dyno, it made 42hp and 31 ft lbs, but that was before i did anything to it. Now with the add ons if done, it mad 47 hp, and 29 ft lbs. Will this timing plate help at all in the hp and torque department?

it should add a lot of torque in the low rpm's. thats what i felt with my ass dyno. i did not notice any difference in the top end.

i would be a scared of 100:1.

when it comes to 2 strokes, i would go by what yamaha says, not the oil manufactuer. yamaha knows the banshee and they know what it needs as far as oil goes. amsoil does not know what their oil is going to be used in. i could be some junky craftsman string trimmer or a drag bike. they just don;t know.

right in the factory owners manual yamaha says if you are using a run of the mill 2 stroke oil, go for 20:1 mix. if using a good quality oil, go for 25:1. most people here use a good oil and go for 32:1 on gas. why is this i dont know. i run 25:1 and go by the basis that yamaha knows more about my motor than anyone else since they are the ones who designed it and have been producing it for a few decades, if you count the rd's anyways.

my leaf blower says 40:1. my ourboard says 50:1. and that is the ratios i use because the manf of the engine knows more about the motors needs than some oil company who is clueless as to what engine the oil is going into.

amsoil just makes a blanket statement of 100:1 for most 2 strokes and leaves it at that without even knowing what type of engine the oil is going to be used in. whats the point in going lean on oil? at the very best you wont hurt anything. at the worst you ruin the motor. at least with a richer mix you know you are getting enough oil to cover most situations. espically if something happens like a jet getting partly blocked and you run a little lean. personally i would rather run rich on oil and have a plugged jet than run lean on oil and have a plugged jet. the motor with a 25:1 mix stands more of a chance of surviving i would imagine and never hope to find out. running 25:1 never hurt a banshee. and if you have it jetted correctly it won't smoke on 25:1 except when the motor is cold, but all 2 strokes smoke when cold. its the nature of burning oil.

i have had my banshee for a year and a half, i run 25:1 and premium gas. i have probably 40 hours on the motor and its got 149psi in the right cylinder and 148 in the left with 22cc domes at sea level. thats basically perfect compression. my motor is still putting out great numbers when you would expect at least a little drop in compression after 40 hours. shit i have known people who had to rebuild the top end after 40 hours of abuse. my motor is also jetted correctly for where i live, i have never fouled a plug in the entire time i have owned the bike. i am still running on the factory yamaha spark plugs that came with the bike when i picked it up new at the dealer.

now here comes the second hand hearsay so take what i am about to say with as big a grain of salt as you want. my brother in law use to race outboard 2 strokes. he said they did some testing of oil ratios and found that the more oil you add the more power you make, up to about 12:1. anything richer than that and you get other problems that make it not worth doing. he said that if the race was a technical course they would run 16:1 and if it was a higher speed course they would run 12:1. now thats freakin rich on oil! i dont advise that for a banshee because quite frankly it does not need to be so rich on oil as they ran since most of us don't race like that type of a race.

20:1 for cheap oil. 25:1 for expensive stuff like the manual says.

I'd go ahead and run whatever it is you have in the tank now.

Check your plugs for detonation. Then run premium for the

rest of the life of your 'shee that is unless you raise your compression.

Keep in mind when you add less oil to your premix ratio,

you are richening your fuel mixture. Make sense?

Less oil means more fuel. So you need to check your plugs

and possibly re-jet.

Not tryin to be Mr. Ass here but you need to read up on oil compositions relative to their respective mix ratios. I will include a link from my site but there is much more info out there regarding oils. The mfg recommend ratios based solely on their oils tested. Full synthetics can work with much high ratios and still protect the engine. We have our own data on oil testing but there is plenty of test data out there regarding ratios with certain oil types.

I agree with the info found on your link. I especially agree with your break in procedure of short shifting while running the throttle more open at lower RPM to seat rings. I've done that on ALL my new engines and have never had a compression issue.

And yes, I run Yamaha 2R. I picked up a case of quarts from (Fe)eBay for $50 delivered!! 32/1 for me.
