33 if he is gonna kick around on the trails and maybe occasionally hit the sand. 35mm if he ever plans on upgrading anything, then he will already have the carb. Try to stick with the pwk, tm, or tmx carbs. Dont use a PJ.

They are a pain in the a$$ to tune. No one ever seems to get them to run right on a 2 into 1 setup.

agreed. can be a bitch to tune the starting circuit and needle circuit. they're just a pita. PWKs are sooo much nicer. or if you want cream of the crop, get a PWK Airstryker.

I myself just bought the 38mm PWK Airstriker for my 2 into 1.

Forgot to mention the 38mm PWK Airstriker I mentioned above is for an aggressive trail port motor.

I was thinking of trying out a 38 also as I have both. Have you ever tried a 35 or just the 38? What mods do you have and what jetting if you dont mind...

There's really no reason to get a 38 over a 35 unless you just happen to find a good deal on a 38. Most anything you have that a single 35mm will not be able to keep up with will be a situation where you'll want duals anyway. Not to say the 38 won't work but no reason to search the 38 out over a 35.
