Arizonaduner Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 I'm ready to put my Cub cyl's on my new motor and I'm unsure about using RTV on the base gasket. I bought these Cub cyl's used and had them replated. I noticed RTV residue on the bottom of the cyl's when I first received them. I didn't think you wanted to put RTV on cyl gaskets. Please advise... bigboybanshee Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 It's not a bad idea to put some on the gasket where the transfers are...I've had mine blow the gasket out right there and it'll definitely put a dampening on your night. Just stick a dab on your fingers and run the gasket between your fingers, then install. It'll help keep it sealed...I also put a little bit on the part between the cylinders too, just cause it's so thin. Quote
okbeast Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 Someone makes some spray copper gasket stuff that is the bomb. Kinda messy but gets a good even coat on the gasket. Quote
dajogejr Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 I use High Temp RTV on both sides, top and bottom of the gasket, especially the outer edges and the divider, that's pretty thin metal on a 68mm bore... Quote
Snopczynski Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 On a steel base gasket, use loctite 515 gel seal. Wont ever leak, easy to get off. Quote
dajogejr Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 I've never seen a steel base gasket for a big bore cub, Snop.... However...stockers use a steel head gasket, may have to check some of that stuff out... Quote
Snopczynski Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 What are they making the cub base gaskets out of? How thick are they? Quote
dajogejr Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 Std. Gasket material...and they go from .012 to .040 that I know of...I'm sure there are plenty of other thicknesses as well. Quote
Snopczynski Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 .012" fiber gasket? thats scary! Quote
dajogejr Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 All day long baby!! I run a .020 on mine...squishes out perfect... Quote
TurboBanshee420 Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 Copper base...... steel head vito's will help rtv is a bad idea anywhere. I've only seen bad things done with it. makes gaskets easy to blow out because it fills any pits in the alum that would normally give gripture for the gasket material. Only paper water pump gaskets have a need for goo. but too much is always bad. Quote

I agree...too much is too much, but a thin coat is all I use and have had no problems for ALL KINDS of motors, big and small...for years, period. Quote
badassbanshee479 Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 I always use rtv on my gaskets!! tried to put an engine together without it and it would not pass a leak down test!! little skim coat on the gaskets and she sealed right up!! Quote
