I'm ready to put my Cub cyl's on my new motor and I'm unsure about using RTV on the base gasket. I bought these Cub cyl's used and had them replated. I noticed RTV residue on the bottom of the cyl's when I first received them. I didn't think you wanted to put RTV on cyl gaskets.

Please advise...

It's not a bad idea to put some on the gasket where the transfers are...I've had mine blow the gasket out right there and it'll definitely put a dampening on your night. Just stick a dab on your fingers and run the gasket between your fingers, then install. It'll help keep it sealed...I also put a little bit on the part between the cylinders too, just cause it's so thin.

Copper base...... steel head vito's will help

rtv is a bad idea anywhere. I've only seen bad things done with it. makes gaskets easy to blow out because it fills any pits in the alum that would normally give gripture for the gasket material. Only paper water pump gaskets have a need for goo. but too much is always bad.

Yeah...OK....sure thing.

Are you talking slopping the shit on, or thin...skim coast to fill voids...

I agree...too much is too much, but a thin coat is all I use and have had no problems for ALL KINDS of motors, big and small...for years, period.

I always use rtv on my gaskets!! tried to put an engine together without it and it would not pass a leak down test!!

little skim coat on the gaskets and she sealed right up!!

Thanks guys, I smeared just a light coat of RTV on the base gasket. We'll see soon.....
