Shee's Dirty Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 When riding trails, if I hit a tree root going into a turn or if I catch the side of a deep cut trail, one of my front wheels turn all the way sideways and gets stuck sometimes. Is somthing wore out and need replaced, or broke or WTF?? It's a real PITA, how do I fix it??? THANKS! Quote
theshee Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Check out alignment, make sure the tie rods are adjusted even on each side, get new tie rod ends, and make sure the steering stem is hitting the stopper. If it isnt bend it back and weld nut or something on there for extra support. Get it fixed thought, thats a good way to bust your ass, i know this from experience. Quote
Shee's Dirty Posted September 12, 2007 Author Report Posted September 12, 2007 I have new inner and outer tie rod ends, but they seem ok.....The alignment is good, I just didn't know if it was a common problem or how to fix it. When you just turn the wheels it's fine, doesn't turn further than it should. But if one of the wheels hit somthing or rub somthing while they're turned, somthing is allowing them to turn sideways and u have to wrestle it back straight. Maybe the steering stops... Definately gotta figure it out before I ride again. Quote

Check for bent things as well. I would guess you have some extra play in a couple of your steering joints which is allowing the steering tie rod end to move outside of it;s range of travel and then go back to being seated which in turn causes your symptoms. Snopczynski Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Your gonna need to pound your steering stop back in place and weld a reinforcement bracket on it. Possibly even weld the side of it up if there is metal that has been mashed off from the steering stem stops. Quote
swrbansheeboy Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 i agree, more than likley your steering stem stop is bent and need's to be pounded back into place. and as Snopczynski said if the end's of the stop have big dents in them you may need to weld them up to fill the dents. here's a pic of the reinforcment i do whenever i prep a frame for powder just to give you an idea... Shee's Dirty Posted September 12, 2007 Author Report Posted September 12, 2007 Thanks for the help guys!! I'll figure it out tomorrow. Is that just like a heavy duty stop you've welded in place?? I'm building a new frame for her now, I'll do the same I guess before I spary it. Quote
Snopczynski Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 you beat the factory stop back in place, then put a bracket on the back so it cant bend again. Quote
. Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 like the others said, your stop is bent a little. It is fine when you are riding until you hit something, than it has enough force to pop into behind the stop. Bang it back and reinforce it. I actually took a little bit off the sides of my bracket. I noticed when it first bent that it turned a lot better, because it was taking longer to hit the stop, then I hit another little tree and bent it more, so I had to bend it back and weld it. After I didnt have that movement anymore, so I took a little off the sides and I've hit stuff since then and it still doesnt lock on me......I do however need a steering stablizer so I dont end up breaking my thumb on my throttle. So what you're saying is that you shaved some material off the sides of the stop on the frame to allow for sharper/more turning of the bars?? Bet that helps riding trails with hairpin turns, how much did you shave off each side? I already have a stabilizer, maybe it will help once I get it fixed. Quote
