elwilliams13 Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 I have a 2006 stock with fmf fatties, powercore silencers, boyesen rad valves, +4 timing with plate, stock carbs and running techniplate 32:1 with 93 octane. I have 2 uni pods on each carb no airbox. I have the vito needles and currently have a 400 main 30 pilot and needle clip is one notch down making it richer. I weigh about 220 and it has a mild bog at wot but as soon as I shift it goes away. I assumed it was the tranny winding out but I may be wrong. I was also wondering if the size of the smoke ring is as important as the color when doing the chops. It is currently medium brown and about 1mm thick. Also will diffrent oils make the smoke ring on the plug change. Is anyone have a similar set up I would be intrested in your numbers or advice. I live in southwest florida it is always high humidity and hot 85-95 degrees. Thanks in advance. Quote
Hilarious Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 Are you ported? You didnt say. If you are running 400 mains on stock porting, I think something is wrong here. I think your mains are too big. Quote
elwilliams13 Posted August 21, 2007 Author Report Posted August 21, 2007 No porting I was thinking A massive air leak? Maybe. But both plugs are burning even and when I had the Toomey air filter set up with the one UNI filter and 340 mains it had a 2mm ring light brown lighter than it is now on the plug chop. So I put on the UNI pods and I got all the way to 400 and the ring is darker but less than 2mm both look identical. At the same times I also added boyesen rad valves. I'm lost on this one. Quote
dajogejr Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 If you have a massive air leak, it won't matter what jet you put in it....trust me on that one. I put 200 to 380 main jets on mine last year..and just about every jet inbetween...didn't make a lick of difference. the mains sound way too big...but, hey...a properly done plug chop is the key. Aftermarket reeds and/or reed cages actually richen up the midrange. You richened it up even more by bumping the needle. Bump the needle two slots leaner...see if that helps (one clip leaner than stock) My advice is find an oil and mixture ratio (technicplate @ 32:1 is just fine) and leave that. On two bikes I've jetted for gas running that oil at 40:1...it left a smoke ring just fine. What kind of terrain are you riding on, what kind of tires, what kind of gearing? Quote
MDS2106 Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 The bog on top end is coming from the 400 mains ,thats way too big. Even on a ported motor thats to big of a main jet.i bet if you start working your way down the bog will clear up... Quote
elwilliams13 Posted August 22, 2007 Author Report Posted August 22, 2007 I am riding on flat terrain sea level I got holeshot front and rear front 21x7x10 rear 20x11x9 gearing is 15 front 41 rear also have a 39 rear if that will help. Quote
Toomey Banshee Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 Just for a point of reference, on my stock 99 with just T-5's, cool head , v-force II's and k & N pods with outer wares I'm running 340 mains with 27.5 pilots and the Toomey (dynojet) clips in the middle. Runs perfect. Your mains sound way big. Quote

On the dynojet needle, you mean 4th clip from the top I think, they have 6 clip positions...or at least mine did... Quote
elwilliams13 Posted August 22, 2007 Author Report Posted August 22, 2007 Well gonna get me some 340 mains today and check for leaks around the intake and see what it does. It runs better with the 30 pilot though than the 27.5 just off idle. Quote
fox_forma Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 he had a 2into1 K&N before, would there be that much of a difference with the POD set-up? Also with the high heat and humidity doesnt that also help cause a rich condition? My buddy has basically the exact set-up besides the +4 timing and I think he's at 320 mains 27.5 pilots and needle in the middle. Were out here in AZ, a little hotter here with less humidity. Also not sure how much truth this holds to it but with after market needles I heard you sometimes need drop the main a little because of the taper of the needle. It would actually allow more fuel in that a stock needle due to how the taper is skinnier towards the bottom. Like I said I have no clue if this is true or not. Quote

The Toomey (Dynojet) needles are a bit longer, but skinner...they richen up a lean spot in the middle with stock needles once you remove the air box. I didn't know they make a K&N two into 1. I know they make a foam Uni 1 into 2....Toomey sells it. And when I had my stock motor, piped bike it was the same jetting for the 2 K&N individual pods as it was the 1 into 2 Toomey foam air filter... EL... Fatties tend to like a fatter pilot. 27.5 with .5 to 1.0 turns out or a 30 with 2 turns out will probably be about right... Quote
elwilliams13 Posted August 22, 2007 Author Report Posted August 22, 2007 Yes it is the UNI filter 2 into 1 set up. But I currently have the 2 stage uni pods on it. I keep getting the 2mm smoke ring with 340 mains but the bigger I go in main jet size it gets darker but smaller than 2mm. Not sure if it makes a diffrence. Also the needle is the Vito's one with 5 slots vs. the 6 slots with the dynojet but it is longer than the stock ones. Quote

elwilliams13 Posted August 24, 2007 Author Report Posted August 24, 2007 Does the +4 have an effect on the smoke ring on the plug? Went from 400 to 340 main and someof the bog went away dropped to a 330 and no bog at all but the smoke ring is a light brown and only 1mm tall but is identical on both plugs uniformity is the same. Sounds like you got it. You just jetted the way I have for years. Jet down, or up until the bog stops and be done with it. As far as your pilots go FMF does like a bigger pilot. Now go out and ride that thing! Quote
