banshee_brock Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 Hey there. I thought I'd try out this forum to get some much-needed help. I've posted at other forums, and haven't gotten any really good advice. I've got an '02 which is bone stock minus the Toomey T-6's, uni-filter, and jet kit. My first problem is that my carbs will NOT stop leaking out of the overflow tubes. I can't count how many times I've torn the things apart, cleaned them, blown out all the jets, put them back together, and, it STILL leaks. I've set float heights, checked and rechecked for clogged jets, set float heights again, and adjusted all setting s back to square one. No luck. My second problem is a lagging right cylinder. The left one seems to be firing fine, while the right has a slugish *pow.........pow...pow..........pow.pow.pow........pow............................pow* to it. It's probably linked to the overflowing carbs, but I'm not sure. This could be a simple fix that I'm just overlooking. Any help?? Quote
black sunshine Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 (edited) When you were checking the carbs did you check the needle and seat by turning the carbs upside down and blowing in the fuel intake? What do the plugs look like when it is acting up? shee4speed Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 (edited) Did you remove the needle valve and clean it?If so it may be jacked up.Might need to replace it.What are you adjusting your floats to 'mm' wise? That would be the only issue with overflow. The pow................pow.pow pow ..........................pow might be solved with that but wont know untill overflow is fixed.Good Luck. I forgot to mention:are your carbs synced? Edited July 20, 2007 by shee4speed Quote
banshee_brock Posted July 20, 2007 Author Report Posted July 20, 2007 I did sync my carbs last summer, and haven't been able to ride much since then, so I'm assuming they're still fine, but I will check that tommorow. I just eyeballed it, so I'm assuming the proper way is with the micrometer. I'm wondering if the right slide is gunked-up. I did remove the needle valve and cleaned it....same time as I synced them. Same with the main jet, etc. At the first cleaning, one of the mains was plugged, but was fine afterwards. I have set the floats to the nearest mm several times, to the book's specs. In fact, I just went out there a few minutes ago, and yet ANOTHER puddle uner the thing. Ggggrrrrr..... I didn't know about the blowing into the fuel intake trick, so I'll try that tommorow, too. I'll post up tommorow night. Quote

When you do this air should not be able to get by. If it does you need to clean or replace the needle/seat. This is certainly your problem with the gas. Try tapping on the side of the bowl with the handle of a screwdriver, this will sometimes help the needle valve seat initially after the carb has been off and jostled around a bunch. Look in your owner's manual or clymers for instructions on syncing carbs-- no micrometer is needed! Edited July 20, 2007 by black sunshine Quote
RIPRuck Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 As for the right side running sluggish make sure you reinstalled the tube that crosses over from one carb to the other.. Should be a tube linking the carbs together from the right side of the left carb to the left side of the right carb. That would def. cause that issue! Quote

I just got off work and am about to go work on the thing. Thanks for the tips. Hopefully I'll be able to get this thing running strong again.... I've still got to - Allign the front-end Tear apart carbs Tear apart brake caliper (brakes are dragging baaad) Adjust parking break (The threads are at their limit....now what?) Tighten/lube the chain Paint rust spots Grease all zerks... I know the Toomey book has recommendations for needle clip position/main jet sizes, but anyone know a good combo for T6's at sea level? Does buying Toomey's jet kit make a difference? Looks like I better get to it. Quote
banshee_brock Posted July 21, 2007 Author Report Posted July 21, 2007 Well, I've only got my brakes bled so far....man those are a pain. I'll get to the carbs a little later today, still a lot of work left to do. Quote
banshee_brock Posted July 23, 2007 Author Report Posted July 23, 2007 Pulled the carbs off, and no air seeps through when blowing in the inlet while their upside down. Floats are set....again.... I was wondering if there are supposed to be clamps on each end of the crossover tube? I don't have any and it seems pretty loose-fitting. I'm thinking maybe the carbs aren't synced after all. I was just eye-balling them. I ordered a Clymer's manual two days ago, so I won't be able to read how to (correctly) do that for about a week. Could anyone paraphrase it for me? Oh yeah, the plugs are both a dark, dark color. Not completely black though, and not wet. (Too rich?) Also, I ran the Klotz Be-nol oil for a while, until I found out that it's for racing-specific motors. Mine's bone stock basically. Could that be giving me some trouble? I'll switch back to my normal HP-2 and see if that makes a difference. Thanks. Quote
