dirtbike77
im working on a 89 banshee, it has t-5 pipes with 270 main jets... the bike has the vent holes in the air box and no lid.... the bike was said to have jus had a top end job done... the bike when u first take of in first the bike rips and then when it shifts from second to third at higher roms the bike breaks up.... and it backfires ''im thinking its a lean condition'' so i put the lid on it and it ran a lil better but it still breaks up at mid to high rpms..? i did a plug chop and the left cylinder plug looks like a biege to tan color the right plug hardly looked touched.. these were brand new plugs... i did a compression check and the left side has 130 and the right side has about 130 as well? what else to check
mpbanshee
Pull the bowls off the bottom of the carbs. Spray carb cleaner and a little compressed air through the main jet. See if that helps.
dirtbike77
ive cleaned the carbs out twice taking apart and cleaning everything with compressed air and carb cleaner.... i checked for the right float bowls and its right... it seems like fi the bike sits and ildes for a minute or two and i take off the bike runs pretty decent from forst to second and when i go a bit faster the the bike breaks up... so it almost like the bike is starving for gas... it has the stock hoses and stock petcock? gas see,s to be flowing pretty well? platinumjason
Id go through the carbs and if they are good Id then move to ignition system and see if you can find any problems there.

badassbanshee479
your main jet seems small to me. I am running a 350 main in my play bike and all it has is boysen reeds, t5's and clamp on filters!
theshee
If it is breaking up on top check the gap on your stator pickup. If thats gapped wrong you will get a high end miss. if you have a ricky stator timing plate pretty good chance that could be your problem. Ricky stator plates are notorious for stripping out and messing up the gap.
dirtbike77
ok i swapped ignotio coils today and i thought is solved the problem and it didnt it still breaks up at high rpms and the bike even backfire's at times.... i also moved the jet needle clip down a notch to see if it richen the condition up a bit and it didnt really do anything... the bike when started idles fine.... even reving it up it sounds fine... when u take off to ride it the bike looses power from about in third gear and it backfires... i cleaned the carbs three times.. dropped the needle down a notch.. new spark plugs, ''with known good igntion coil'' no tors.. wat should i try next.. it almost like the bike is starving for gas? wat about adjusting float hieght

badassbanshee479
Put a bigger main jet in it!!! If it wants more fuel give it to it. like I said I am running 350 mains in my t5 play bike I would try a 300 in your bike, if it goes away do a plug chop and go from there. CadillacBanshee
I was about to post about the exact same problem with my bike. When i first start it it rips beautifully, but after a couple of minutes theres a bog right in the middle of the powerband and it kind of misses at top end. I tried a bigger main but it runs way to rich, bogs all around, and leaves my plugs super wet. My needle clip is at #3. What do you guys think? dirtbike77
i jumped up to 290 jet from a 270 today and it made a diffrence but as soon as i hit third the bike started to loose power and backfire? i pulled the pipes off to look into the face of the piston and they both look n pretty good and it still has right around 130 p.s.i...? the carbs were cleaned again... the plug electrode is a dark carmel? whta could be caussing the backfire ... i pulled the flywheel cover off and a little water leaked out.... everything was corroded but no frayed wires...
