87sheerips Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Hey all, need some opinions on this. My bike runs awesome, but doesnt like to idle. It idles way low, and usually stalls out without blurping it once and a while. Im running 28PWKs, 160 main and 48 or 50 pilot(i think thats my pilot size). I believe my air screw is 1.5 turns out on both carbs. (Im not in town right now so I cant get to my bike to check specifics) My mods are below, do you think i might want a bigger pilot?? Am i running out of fuel at the low RPMs? My plugs look good, a little on the rich side but it rips WOT. Id just like to get that nice idle back!! Thanks for any input! Quote
trueraiderfan Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 I dunno what your elivation is bro but I run a 58 pilot in the winter and like a 56 or 54 or so in the summer and mine idles just fine. and I live in Kansas and elivation is like 1100 above sea level. hope this helps ya. Quote
dajogejr Posted March 13, 2007 Report Posted March 13, 2007 Try turning the air screws all the way in, then back them out to .5 turns. If it runs better....you need bigger pilots. If it runs worse, turn it out .5 turns at a time until off idle response is good. Wait 20 seconds between adjustments to ride it. Make sure the bike is warmed up...too. If you turn it out more than 2.5 turns, smaller pilots. The pilots end in 0, 2, 5, or 8. (i.e. 42, 45, 48, 50....and so on.) Same for mains. Quote
locogato11283 Posted March 13, 2007 Report Posted March 13, 2007 if you gotta "blurp" it, it sounds like youre cleanin it out to me.. i think pilot is too big. you need to see whats in there. if its a 50 drop to a 45. if its a 48 drop to a 42. ive never run anything bigger than a 48 in a PWK carb on any motor ive ever had. (stock stoke, 4mm and 10mm) Quote

Thanks for the tips Dave, nice rule of thumb to go from! Just to throw it out there, if I end up crankin my air screw way out, but it fixes the idle- call it good? or get smaller pilots and start the air screws from 0? if you gotta "blurp" it, it sounds like youre cleanin it out to me.. i think pilot is too big. you need to see whats in there. if its a 50 drop to a 45. if its a 48 drop to a 42. ive never run anything bigger than a 48 in a PWK carb on any motor ive ever had. (stock stoke, 4mm and 10mm) Yea loco, it is like im cleanin it out. It seems to load up a bit just sittin there. I think ill give daves tip a try and go from there. Thanks for the input, but now that I think of it I have never touched the pilots in these carbs!! Quote
Banchetta Posted March 13, 2007 Report Posted March 13, 2007 If the air screws like to be 2.5 turns out, then go smaller on the pilot and start the air screws over again...idealy they should be between .5-1.5 turns out.. If you feel that its loading up, then drop the pilot....jetting is trial and error. This will help you learn about your shee...you'll find there is more potential in gaining hp and throttle response then most mods out there..Mods are worthless w/o tuning. W/ that said, you might want to learn how to jet your shee and start practicing...since modding a shee is endless..... Quote

Just havent spent the time dialing in the idle. Its been more of a pain in the sub-zero temps here too. I know im spot in with the main, now time to play with the pilot & air screw. Thanks for the input! well id say you answered your own question. if its loading up then drop the pilot and then go from there. if its loading up that bad, the air screw alone is not gonna fix it. Yea i tend to do that shit!! Its not loading up too bad, it clears out as soon as i "blurp" it and revs clean all the way to WOT. Plus it rides/runs great, so it must just be a pilot circuit issue Quote
