SandBlastin30 Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 I am looking to buy a utiltiy quad for hunting and snowplowing. I also want something I can take to the dunes for family and friends to ride. I ride at siverlake MI. Will a 500cc quad be able to go up the bigger hills, or do I need to go bigger. I am looking at 03 - 06 used polaris sportsman's and yamaha grizzly's. Quote
theshee Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Ive never seen 500cc utility quads where we dune, but we take my wifes wolverine 450 and it will go pretty good. It wont climb everything but it goes most places. There was a fella on an outlander 800 and it went anywhere he wanted it to. I think you would be alright on a 500 as long as you dont want to climb really steep stuff... Quote

You just won;t be haulin ass Quote

You just won;t be haulin ass thanks for the replies. i've seen some smaller utlility quads climb some big dirt hills, but never noticed any at the dunes. From what i've read about the outlander 800, i'm sure it will go anywhere. The smaller cc i go the more money i have left to put into my shee! Quote

They make it most places, but they are very slow and get stuck in the soft stuff pretty quick. You're pretty much guaranteed to see the police trying to pull each other off a dune atleast once a weekend. Quote

I wish the cops around here rode those things, It would sure make it alot easier to get away from them. Quote
alcoholbanshee Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 I also ride at Silver Lake......one of the guys that rides with us once in a while has an Arctic Cat 500 4x4. There is no place he cannot go. It gets around quite well. And hell if one of us needs a tow, it's nice to have that tank to pull us out!!!!!!!! Quote
feedmelies Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 I have a Prairie 650 4x4. It does pretty well in the dunes in 4x4. In 2 wheel is does alright, you just have to keep your momentum up and keep from climbing anything steep. So long as you have a 4x4 option, a 500+ cc utility quad should be a great family machine. When I got stuck out at Olds (in Glamis) back in November, my brother in law and his buddy came out to tow me on the 650. It managed to carry two large guys while pulling my Banshee and me up and out of the valley without hesitation. Quote
RIPPEN Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 We have a sportsman 500 H.O. that we run around the dunes on.. Gets around just fine when you air it down a bit.. RIPPEN Quote
puddle jumper Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 my 700 prairie climbs everything at the dunes Quote

The OR boys are usually on 400EX's or better, atleast the last time I was there. I may be making a career move to Portland so I might get to enjoy the noise and no alcohol laws like everyone else who lives there. :shoothead: Quote
FireHead Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 my 700 prairie climbs everything at the dunes I think rider talent and airing down the tires probably plays a small role in the success of a utility quad in the dunes. Quote

SandBlastin30 Posted March 8, 2007 Author Report Posted March 8, 2007 Thanks again for the info. I have found a couple of sportsman 500's, and i think i will buy one of those. If this is the case, then i will be spending some good money with Jeff at FAST. Quote
korndawg Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I don't know about the 500cc quads, but a friend of mine has a 660 grizzly that will pretty much go where ever he wants it to and do pretty much whatever he wants it to at the dunes. Quote
