dawarriorman Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Shit, Id be willing to invest if you were going to get a company off the ground. I bet quite a few other people would be willing to as well. Blackbeast has obviously done some homework, and would be a good partner. Just got to make sure its not going to be illegal emissions wise, people have to be able to ride them in CA (glamis). The things I can think of off the top of my head that haven't been mentioned is stuff like advertising. You get yourself in the magazines (dirt wheels) with a nice article and some good ads, and your set. That will cost quite a bit though. And your going to have to get someone racing it somewhere. Right now if Im not mistaken, it couldn't race in the pro classes anywhere (fucking ATVA decided that production classes should be 4 stroke only), although possibly GNCC. Quote
BlackBeast Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 (edited) There are ways to make 2 strokes cleaner, but wether or not they can pass CA emissions is a tough call. We could do a combination of direct-injection for the fuel delivery, pair it with a lean burn setup on the ignition, then top it off with some sort of catalytic converter. The big issue here is keeping the cost down, but I have a few ideas on that. Worst case, we could offer a 4-stroke on the street edition only. There is also the possibility of building a 2-stroke that would run on diesel, or at least be categorized as a diesel. This gives you much more flexibility when it comes to emissions. Not sure what technical hurdles would be involved in this, though. Advertising can be expensive, but there are some extremely effective ways of getting the word out without breaking the bank. For instance, when my street Banshee is done, I'll be taking it to Daytona Bike Week, as well as Sturgis. Tell me that won't draw some attention. Not just from the participants, but those events always have magazine coverage. Again, don't short-change ourselves by thinking this is a "dirt-wheels only" crowd. If we're going to market to the "custom rides" market, Daytona and Sturgis are both gold mines. You can bet the same guys that drop $40k on a custom Harley would spend $20k or more easily for something even more wild. And I wouldn't be surprised if my quad ends up in SportBike, Iron Horse, or any other custom bike magazine... Even if it is just a photo in passing. Another avenue to get attention is to participate in the SEMA shows. It's not that hard to get into. Registration for the event will run about $2500, plus the cost of putting together a kick-ass display. Again, not only do you get attention at the show, but lots and lots of magazine coverage from just about every automotive market out there. Edited July 31, 2006 by BlackBeast Quote
Shee-Male Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 This is a great Idea Ben!, theres no body sayin you couldn't start right now, If you had an order, you could buy a shee with title, mod the front clip, and add your components (I'd be up for makin you some custom graphics kits ). You can bet you'd be under your 10,000 in parts and materials, even if you had someone else do the frame mods. Sell off the leftover parts from the Banshee purchased and even if you don't make as much as you hoped in labor, the experiance would be an eye opener, I'm sure some of the manufacturers would be onboard to help you out aswell, especially if you put there name on it. If you have a little space and a credit card you could be well on your way, as you said you know how to build a kick ass racer, the fact is you are a racer and that my friend carries alot of weight with people! Make a buisness name, print up some cards and get the word out, your gonna have to start small, so talk to some of the manufacturers your fermilliar with and get feedback from them, if their onboard your set. Make sure you accurate with your pricing is all I can offer for advice, sorce everything you'll need for a "basic build" and go from there. Make a competative quad for the same money as a 450 and they will flok to you. I'm sure I speak for most of us on here when I say good luck and we support you 110%, you need anything (other than money lol) I'm here for ya buddy!! ....remember Erasure Quads? Quote
airdog Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Just reading about this makes me shiver... ...unfortunately I'm a college boy, paying college tution right now. But I hope to make the big bucks when I'm out, and you can count on an order from me in maybe 2010/2011. Best of luck until then Quote
DUNE-A-TIC Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 Not trying to start anything by what i'm about to say, the idea is awsome and i'd support it any way I could. I just finished reading the August ATV action mag, and as fore mentioned there is always a possibility that Yamaha has something in mind of their own. Though the ring ding ding is what we all love and are involved in. The 500 twin in the Phazer snowmobile is just sick with potential to find a home an atv, even the rebirth of the Banshee as mentioned in the article. Any of us that live and breath the drag bikes know that the YFZ 450's,DS's,Raptors have taken a rank as a formidable power plant. If their 500 ever found a production home in an atv, it would change the drag world for sure producing 80hp stock and no telling the aftermarket possibilities.79.0mmx63mm x2 is just begging for a buider to go nuts on, seriously. Like I said, i'm with the resurrection idea, but keeping a close eye on the powerplants out there is just wise from our stand-point at least. A few have seen RB's Honda powered warrior in action, and it is soon to go into an ultra-light ex frame, the competition is definitely keeping an eye on this build. I always keep an eye on the competition and possibilities, if yamaha ever did produce that bike it would just be awsome in my opinion and would definitely effect sales of this idea we are talking about. I think there will be many, many years of used Banshees on the market before they become "hard to find". The 250R became hard to find for awhile, now they are everywhere to be found. Why, they are loosing their place in many of the race catagories against the new machines available. I'm no marketing expert by any means and for sure not mainstream in thought, just throwing some history into the mix of this cool idea. The Banshee is a classic and has it's place forever, like the R has dominated for years in it's world. When I saw the Rebel Star come into production, I thought for sure it would make it just from the"hard to find" aspect and pure race ready build. It was a little pricey at 14k if I recall correct, but thought for sure it would be a hit. It wasn't. Building a Banshee from scratch is a do-able concept and may have it's need in the future, I just don't see it as a strong investment just yet, but getting all the contacts and sources may be. G-MC Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 Just hearing the idea of a street legal quad made me nut in my pants. :baseball_w00t: You guys sound like you're definately on the right track with this idea. I've got nothing but love for someone that can see this through into reality. Quote
