fastcar01 Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 How do you lighten the flywheel? I guess a better question is, is someone williing to supply me a print? Also What about a print on a modded star? I guess really just one that shows the dimensions to cut) I would like to do this, but do not want to cut what I shouldn't. I would pay a small fee for the prints if required. Thanks I should be able to open any CAD file, or a PDF would be fine also. Quote

I saw your thread. I feel I could probably cut the star from the posted pic of the backcut. I assume the radius on the neutral backcut is kept the same, but I am not sure how deep to cut it. It looks like you just follow the radius of the pins on each point, but I am not sure where to start and end the radius (although it looks like you could wing both those items). I can do the work myself and would like to do it. I just don't want to cut wrong. I offered to pay for the prints, cause I understand people make money off this. I just want to save some money and learn. Quote
csrmel Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 start the bike up and hold a flat file to the flywheel as the bike is idling. the metal shavings will fly around and it gets pretty loud so be sure to wear osha approved ear and eye protektion. Quote

I would not recommend doing this. Dangerous for one and the second, you are almost guaranteed to have spots with more shaved off than others which will lead to alot of viberation and you will more than likely destroy the flywheel in the process. Just buy a flywheel puller, I got mine for like $15 take it off and send it to boonman or rocketboy. Quote

platinumjason Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 please tell me thats a joke :baseball_w00t: thats the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard other than britney spears is a virgin Yeah I seriously laughed out loud when I read that. Whoever reads this post that is something not to do with a flywheel. Quote
00ultraz28 Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 I'm gonna do my shift star myself, i'll probably the leave the nuetral back cut alone.... as far as the flywheel. From what i under stand you shave some of the material off with a lathe, I did some machine work for a couple of years so i would do it if i had access to tha machines, but i think i'ma end up just sending it off to get it done Quote

Or do you turn it down? If you turn down the outside, what do you do about the risers for the pickup? DO you just go before and after them? "Just buy a flywheel puller, I got mine for like $15 take it off and send it to boonman or rocketboy." This is a fine idea for someone who has no machine access or does not have a buddy who can do it, or someone who has money to blow. I have not priced it out yet, but I bet it is aroun $50-$75 for either mod. I would rather save the $100-$150 to spend on other mods. Not to mention, there is nothing like the feeling of doing something yourself. Quote

Doin the shift star is not rocket science, I did mine on the 'ol grinder as well as many others for friends, the idea is to just remove the point, and I deepened the recess with a dremal tool. I also lightened my own flywheel, chuck it up in the lathe and support it with the center, double check the runout with a dial indicater and then cut material off eithr side of the pickups, I also removed some material fron the face as well. If you are fermilar with a lathe you'll do just fine. While your in there, you can slot the holes in the stator plate and advance your timing. Quote
00ultraz28 Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 wish i was still doing some machine work and had access to a lathe.... I would do it myself, but being 200 miles away at school and only being home on the weekends, i dont have much time to get stuff done so when i do get to work on it i have to have everything ready to go. I'll do the shift star because its such an easy mod, but i'll be sendng my flywheel off to have it done. BTW I believe the shift star is 20 bucks and the flywheel is 65 Quote
Polish Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 please tell me thats a joke :baseball_w00t: thats the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard other than britney spears is a virgin RB Is that how you had done mine? Answer to the origional post.........How do I lightning my flywheel?.........answer is............ Put it in a Box send it Flat Rate to Rocketboy :thumb: Its that easy!!!!! Quote

I would not reccomend doing this at idle. run it at least 4000rpm to start. The file cuts most efficient at that speed. Be sure to increase the rpm as the diameter gets smaller too. Good luck. Quote
DreamShee03 Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 I am laughing so hard i can't type this. DONT RUN THE BIKE AND TRY AND LIGHTEN THE FLY WHEEL PLEASE. i really dont want to know what would happen to it. Now back to the post. I also lightened my flywheel with a lathe and it worked fine.
