1.6i Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 how the hell does a crank bend? did it smack the rod around or something....? Quote
DIRTMAN350 Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 If the crank is bent it had to tore up other items in the motor. Did you feel any vibration from it? PM Jeff with FAST Racing or Passionre for some quotes and they can help ya out. Quote
Justintoxicated Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Did you bend it messing with the flywheel or something? If you want a stroker now is the time to do it Quote
GSXKID Posted May 5, 2006 Author Report Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) Its not bent in the middle its on the flywheel side. Its not like terrible but you can see it when you spin the crank. BTW I havent ridden it much because it was running shitty.I took maybe one ride. I got the whole shee for 1000$ and now i know why. Edited May 5, 2006 by GSXKID Quote
Shee-Male Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 you can buy a fresh rebuild for yours for about 500.00, so 1000.00 for the shee is still a great deal!, take the couple grand you saved on the purchase price and make that thing crazy. Quote

Wallrat Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 IMO it really isn't worth rebuilding the stock crank. They're not 100% rebuildable so they'll never be as good as new. If you're going aftermarket, the cost ofa +4 longrod ain't much more than a stock stroke. Course then u need pistons, cut domes or head, porting... Gets expensive quick. Quote
trail rider Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 GSXKID im in the same boat you are. I traded this nice runing little blaster for this ragged out banshee that a guy was selling for 1500. it was rough, but it had alot of aftermarket stuff too. And I still aint sure even what exact year it is . its got a rear end of an 87-88, dark gray and yellow plastic which is like a 97 or 98, and the viv # on the frame doesnt matchup with anything . but the worst damage is that some idiot befor must have been going wide fuckin open and the chain derailed and totally fucked up and busted the stator and the top and bottom part of the case are broke off and it leaked tranny fluid in one little spot, but its jb welded. the flywheel is so fucked up it looks like some idiot took a hammer and just beat the hell out of it. the stator plate is broke and they welded/rigged some piece of metal to hold the thing that makes the spark on the flywheel. and the crankshaft is bent where you screw the flywheel nut on. but it ran when I got it , I even rode it a little in the drive way befor I got it, but I didnt ride it once I got home. I was to excited that I had to tear into the motor . the clyinders are bored like .100 over and are pretty messed up, hell they didnt even have head studs in them, the guy used long bolts to hold the head on. so I just bought stock cylinders on ebay, should be getting em soon. I think I might end up getting another stock crank and a kit I saw on ebay with the flywheel, stator and wiring, and adjustable ricky stator plate for $250 but first I gotta get the main banshee goin again, the big end rod bearing went out while goin 6th gear and I have never seen such a mess that it did. Im gonna get a hot rods crank. these are pretty reliable for a stock motor, right? Quote

The ricky stator deal is a good upgrade, you could go with a longrod crank and matching pistons and that would add some reliability, but not as much power as getting the stroker and cutting the head to match. Sounds like it needs some TLC. If you look around you can find some deals for sure. I will likely be selling my 12-port cylinders (if I don't trade them in) stock crank this summer. I'm hoping to at least get what the porting for the cylinders cost. Nothing wrong with them, just addicted to horsepower. Quote
GSXKID Posted May 5, 2006 Author Report Posted May 5, 2006 What is the cheapest way out? I just want to ride and I have very little money right now too. Quote
KlotzBanshee Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Stories like this scare me I've had my 99 since new, and the bottom end has never been touched, other than a clutch kit which doesn't really count. Is this something I should watch out for? Is there a life expectancy for the bottom end? Is there anything you can do to prevent catastrophic failure like poor GSXKID and trail rider have experienced? forgive me, I'm not trying to steel your thread GSXKID. I think any answers to these questions would help both of us, or even all of us who don't know. Quote

But I got this thing cause I wanted one cheap to fix up, like a project or something, but this one turned out to have a little more problems than I first expected. I already bought some stock 2005 cylinders on ebay and I should be getting them any day. and I may just end up geting a vito's crank and new flywheel, stator and adj. stator plate. And one more problem I noticed was that the gears have alot of play in them, like when I hold the countershaft and turn the mainshaft gear, it has alot of play, way more than the tranny in my other banshee. Any one know what this could be? and one more quick question, is a hot rods crank reliable for a pretty much stock motor? it just has pipes as the only big performance part. Quote
