Cruisin down a fireroad doin about 40. Came up quick on some ruts and didn't see this nice mound of dirt piled up in the road. Hit it square and got bucked off like like a damn cowboy on a bull. Ended up slammin to the ground on my back. Smacked the back of my head hard and slid about thiry feet down the road. My shee never left its tires though. If I didn't have my lid on who knows how I would have ended up. Anyway, my helmet shows no damage but I have heard from many peeps that you should replace it if you have any kind of impact. What do you think? Should I get a new lid?

Well from what I understand you're supposed toss the lid in the ga'bage. They say that the damping material surrounding the inner part of the helmet is there to slow and soften the impact so your brain doesn't slam full force. The damping material (which looks like foam to me) is now condensed in that area and no longer offers that cushion, which is why you're supposed to get a new lid. If it was me, and the impact wasn't that hard....what am I talking about that was me a month ago banghead -f#@k it, I'd wait to the next big spill

Jags right on that. thats why I cringe at seeing people selling them at flea markets. I've even bought some just to bust them in front of the guy just to keep some kid from buying it and getting hurt with it. most manufacturers will even take it back to check it for you(most times they hack it up and you need to buy a new one anyway.) I'd toss it myself. after an impact like that I wouldn't trust it. A buddy of mine on another board did something similar and his helmet looked fine but he complained of headaches. went to the Dr and found he had a concussion, so we talked him into sending the lid back to Shoei to get it inspected even though he said it was fine. they called him back to say the helmet was trashed and the material on the upper back inside was crushed 75% and there was a 1/2" gap between the foam and the shell. If we didn't get him to send it back that could have been his melon the next time he crashed. He even bought one of those shock-spotter things, now that he's a believer. Helmets are far cheaper than your dome, bro.

You should check it out really well and see if your head made an imprint then make the call if it's good enough for you anyway. It also depends on how old they are too, the foam in them is only supposed to last a couple years and then it breaks down and you're supposed to replace it. I've taken a couple hits with mine and plan on getting a new one later this year. Also depends on the riding you do, if you are getting alot of air and/or racing you're more likely to be testing that shell out sooner rather than later.
