Bansheekidd97 Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 hi everyone, my brother has a 89 banshee he just picked up pretty cheap. when he got it, the clutch was real hard to pull. ok so we thought it was the clutch cable we went down to the local shop and got a new one( motion pro) put it on and it would not adjust up right. so we thought it needed to be adjusted from the pressure plate after noticing that the alingment arrows were off and yes we held tension on the linkage. so we pulled the cover off and followed the book to a tee on adjusting the clutch and we got the arrows lined up perfact still couldnt get it to adjust right so now we assume the clutch is junk. we get a new clutch kit (tusk) put it in line the arrows up again still nothing. its like the throw of the cable is to long so we think we might have the wrong cable we go to motion pro web site look up the number its right. so we get to looking at the old cable and notice its alittle different on the case side it has like two inches of thread and two nuts well some one took some pvc pipe and made like a 3/4 inch shim, which is about what we need to make this adjust up right, but the new cable is different it has like a plastic washer that sits on the right side of the u shaped peice where it bolts down on the crank case. are we missing something here or what? I dont know. we have done searchs here and on other sites and have done tons of reading i cant figure it out please help..... Thank you Quote
dajogejr Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 First...get a new cable or get the right cable. The thought of a "plastic shim" ruining a weekend or even a day of riding would suck... Second, time to take apart your clutch. You might have Heavy Duty Springs in your clutch. If that's the case, it's going to be harder to pull. You can get an easy pull lever and perch for relatively cheap... A lot of people put new clutches in their banshee and put HD springs in that don't need it. Since you didn't list motor mods, I"m going to assume you don't have an extensively built shee. Unless you're running a pipes, jetted, ported and higher compression motor, 3 HD springs and 3 stock springs should work just fine... Quote
MILO Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 mine was hard to pull sometimes and slipped other times... it was the push lever assembly. the seal had gone bad and let dirt and shit into the bearing and around the lever and was binding up all the time. sometimes it would be super hard to pull, then there was nothing. replaced the seal, bearing and whole assembly and added a motion pro cable. even with all hd springs on my tusk clutch, it's pretty easy to pull. dajogejr Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 They pulled the cover off...if they didn't clean the pushrod/ball bearing then that was a waste.... I'd check the springs... Quote
sheenut05mx Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Is the problem that it has to much slop in the cable or it pulls hard? Quote
Bansheekidd97 Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Posted February 18, 2006 sorry guys, i guess that write up was a little confusing i just re read it and confused myself, anyhow the problem started with a hard pulling clutch lever i mean EXTREMLY hard. 15 mins is all you wanted and then your hand killed, plus it had a real shitty pull to it. now after a new cable and clutch.. the cable has to much slop cant get enough adjustment out of the perch, adjusted all the way out it just starts to pull the clutch linkage. if i can get the slop out of the cable it would solve my problem.. thank you Quote
suzuki0702 Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 get the genuine yamaha cable..most dealers have it in stock for around 13-15 bux... Quote
810darren Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 if you our some one had the clutch apart ther is a little ball bearing at the end of the push rod it may have fallen out.it sets behind the adjuster on the clutch .if this happend it will cause you to have to much play thus causing not enough engagement on the clutch hope this may help! Bansheekidd97 Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 im positive the ball bearing is in there thnk you though Quote
dawarriorman Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 sorry guys, i guess that write up was a little confusing i just re read it and confused myself, anyhow the problem started with a hard pulling clutch lever i mean EXTREMLY hard. 15 mins is all you wanted and then your hand killed, plus it had a real shitty pull to it.now after a new cable and clutch.. the cable has to much slop cant get enough adjustment out of the perch, adjusted all the way out it just starts to pull the clutch linkage. if i can get the slop out of the cable it would solve my problem.. thank you 475569[/snapback] Well, if you're sure the ball bearing is in there and you have the correct cable, then the only thing I could think of would be that you didn't adjust it right. Before you adjust it, you set the freeplay to the max (screw in the adjuster at the clutch lever all the way). You should be able to pull the lever in most of or all of the way without any tension. Then you adjust it till the arrows are lined up while pushing on the clutch arm. Then adjust the free play to spec (1/2" or something like that, I forget). If thats what you did, and you still have too much slop, then adjust the clutch again, but this time don't screw in the cable all the way at the perch. I think when I did mine when the cable adjustment was bottomed out, most of the pull was slack, but the last inch wasn't. Try adjusting your freeplay like that, then adjust the clutch. Quote
Bansheekidd97 Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 i dont think its in the clutch. because on mine the arrows are the same place we have his. i think its in the cable it just has to much throw. is there anything that goes between the cable and the hold down on the crank case or does the cable simply rest up against it? i didnt see anything on mine,i was trying to avoid taking off my cable and trying it on his but at this point its worth a try i think. im going to the dealership tomarrow to get a stock yamaha cable.. thank you Quote
