wade30 Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 I bought a 87 banshee not running. this is what i know. last mod was a tether kill switch. was running after that. he then parked it for three years and now there is no spark. Have ohmed the stator, coil, on/off switch, removed kill switch and re installed key switch, all ohmed out ok. removed tors control box from system still no spark. ground is good. cleaned and reconnected all ignition connectors. Tors wiring from carbs were disconnected when i got it, and ran that way from what i was told. I'm guessing all that leaves is the cdi, which i'm working on getting a good used one. Just wondering if i'm on the right track or if anyone has any other suggestions. My first shee, and couldn't pass it up at 500 bucks Quote
FIRST BANSHEE Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 Welcome to the hq. $500 is only the beginning. have you tried a new set of plugs, ckeck the plug caps? Quote
wade30 Posted February 16, 2006 Author Report Posted February 16, 2006 plugs are new, and gapped. ohmed from neg. side of coil through caps and had 4000 ohms or so. I believe that is in the proper ball park. If not, can i check the caps themselves? Quote
banshee tuner Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 Take a look at the pickup coil by the flywheel, make sure it is close enough or is not corroded. Quote

My first shee, and couldn't pass it up at 500 bucks 474494[/snapback] i got a cdi box for you just took it off my quad will fit a 87 whent through the same problem it ended up it was the key switch , it was rusty where it made contact , i got one from yamaha (45 bucks i think)it started rite up. i did the same as you, bought non running banshee with no spark, took me a while to get it running. check everything the whole wiring harness, every wire. if you need cdi let me know , Quote
wade30 Posted February 16, 2006 Author Report Posted February 16, 2006 well I'm going to check the pick up coil gap today i hope, and after that i'll check the whole harness. should keep me busy until i get the cdi box. Thanks for all the help guys, i'll let you know what i come with on the pick up coil. Quote
fastbanshee8 Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 Disconnect the tether kill switch, and try it. I had one, that shorted out, and it wouldn't start. Quote
wade30 Posted February 17, 2006 Author Report Posted February 17, 2006 I have removed tether switch and installed key switch which ohms good. I just checked pickup coil, it is clean and i have the gap set so matchbook cover slides in and out with slight drag. Still no spark. How hard of a kick over do i need to get a spark if all is good? Trying to check for spark myself and it's kind of difficult. Quote
bd11stang Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 (edited) remove the black/white wire from the wiring harness.at the cdi plug and see if it fires.if it fires you have a bad safety swicth or a wire grounded out.thats how i found my bad wire.yamaha tech said to try this when everything checked out good.don't cut wire gust remove it from plug.hope this helps Edited February 18, 2006 by bd11stang Quote
woodro77 Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 when i check for spark i take plugs out of head , makes it easy to kick over. can do it with your hand Quote
wade30 Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Posted February 18, 2006 cool. I have been using my hand with plug ground strap on head bolt. Just didn't know if doing it by hand would be enough. Thanks. Quote
wade30 Posted February 21, 2006 Author Report Posted February 21, 2006 ok, i couldn't get the black/white wire out of connector. is there an easy way? Second, I've read some other posts that say the coil grounds through it's mount with the frame, so i checked the neg. post of coil to the frame and it ohmed at 22 ohms, I am assuming i need to pull this and clean the mount area? I have a used cdi on the way, that's next i guess. Also i have been leaving the tors control unplugged while checking all this stuff is this ok? Thanks for all the advice guys. Quote
wade30 Posted February 24, 2006 Author Report Posted February 24, 2006 First of all, thanks everyone for all the advice and help. I got my used cdi and now I have spark! Now i just need to put it all back together and see how it will run. Thanks again! Quote
