oceansidesurf Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Hi! I've got a 2002 Banshee that I just converted to twist throttle and removed the TORS caps by replacing them with standard caps and throttle stops. I've done this conversion before on my old bike with no problems. The bike has Toomey T-5's on it and I jetted the bike to the Toomey specifications: 280 Mains, 25 Pilot. The bike runs great....once it's running. When it's cold, it is hell trying to get it to start. It's acting like I'm not getting any "choke" when cold. Even when the choke is fully out, I can't get more than a few seconds of running out of the engine before it dies. Even when it is running briefly, If I give it any throttle, it just dies out. I have to do the process about 5-10 times until it is slightly warm enough to give it some throttle. I've checked the crossover hose, it's in good shape....AND I thought I did a good job of cleaning out all of the jets from any loose metal shavings from the tap job for the throttle stops..... Any suggestions here? THANKS!!!! Brian Quote
Dinner Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 What temperature is it around your place right now..are you talking about its cold and the weather is cold, or just trying to start it when its warm outside Quote
oceansidesurf Posted January 6, 2006 Author Report Posted January 6, 2006 It's when it's warm outside...or cool...doesn't matter. If the engine just hasn't been started in a few hours (is essentially "cold") That's when it's hard to start. Thanks! Brian Quote
Dinner Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 (edited) Have you checked your plugs, they're not getting wet from kicking it over, did you swap the bowls around for some reason, maybe take your carbs apart and clean them again, mine is acting the same way, but thats just because my pilot isnt big enough, maybe get new pilots-27.5 and try that Edited January 6, 2006 by Dinner Quote
yammerhammer98 Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Did you check the small hose that connects the carbs. I mistakenly left that hose disconnected and my bike wouldn't start unless I primed it with a few drops of fuel directly into the plug hole or starting ether. It also ran like crap with a big air hole in each carb! Reconnected the hose and now it always starts on the first or second kick, hot or cold. Quote
FIRST BANSHEE Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 if you swapped bowls on accident, that could be your problem. the left bowl has a tube it to pull gas. I would check that. Quote
Banchetta Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 if you swapped bowls on accident, that could be your problem. the left bowl has a tube it to pull gas. I would check that. 456157[/snapback] Agreed, check that you haven't swapped the bowls, only one of the bowls will have a little jet in the bottom of the bowl...if it still starts hard after that, then you might want to try upping the pilots to a 27.5...as for the needles, I'd try upping them a clip also. 4th clip from the blunt end...your mains will most likely be too lean. For 60 degree F weather, I'd go up to 350 mains...Toomey likes the fuel. Quote
Banchetta Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 Another thing, pull the air cleaner out and look inside the intake to make sure one of the slides isn't sticking up or that you haven't put the slides in backwards, the cutaway should face the air box...common mistake. Quote
oceansidesurf Posted January 8, 2006 Author Report Posted January 8, 2006 Thanks for all of your suggestions....I've checked the hose between the carbs and I'm pretty sure the bowl didn't get swapped as I've worked on the carbs "one at a time." I'm going to check all of the other suggestions this weekend. I'll also move those idle jets up. I have a set of 30's left over from my last banshee that I'll add in to give a try. Any other suggestions? Thanks for all of your help!! Brian Quote
