oldman Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 Clymer mentions installing the stator side crank seal with the green stripe on the seal away from the crank. I have had my bike since it was new and this is the first time it has been rebuilt. The factory installed seal had the green stripe towards the crank. I guess I just want to be sure that Clymer does not have a misprint. Perhaps it can be installed either way. How yall been installing this seal? Quote
fast87 Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 all seals of that type(the round one that seals the crank to the cases right?) go on a specific direction...................................ok enough waiting, that direction is.....................the flat side is always outside, so the little spring is towards the crank, along with the cavity in the seal that the spring is in, all that goes towards the crank/oil....good luck and remember absolutely NO lubrication(foreign or natural) goes ont he OUTSIDE of that seal, or on the case where the outside of the seal mates...carefully put some engine assembly lube(KY is not recommended for engines, sorry) on the inside of that seal, you can also use engine oil or 2 stroke oil, just don't get it between the seal and case...only oil between seal and crank...i explained that as simply as possible, you never know what kinda speshal kids read this shtuff...hope it works for ya and do u know how to install it?? if you're worried about the spring falling off inside the engine(the seal will no longer do it's job if this happens) i have another trick for ya...installation can be done carefully by tapping the outer edge of the seal with a small hammer and walking it in evenly, don't get it in sideways or too deep(far), even with the case or where the old one was is plenty, good luck ~Mark~ Quote
oldman Posted December 2, 2005 Author Report Posted December 2, 2005 Thanks for the detailed reply Mark. The stator side crank seal has a spring on both sides. I guess I will install it with the green striped side facing out, as Clymer says. As I mentioned, the factory installed seal had the green stripe facing in. The seal never failed, I am just replacing them because I split my cases to inspect my lower end. Quote
ssanddemon Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 I had this seal fail last year, sucking air and making the left side misfire. I finally tracked it down to the stator seal facing the wrong direction (green toward crank). I did pull the crank for welding when the bike was new, and I never have convinced myself that I put it together with the dirty side facing in on reassembly- I think the factory put many, many bikes together with this seal facing the wrong way. If you inspect this seal carefully, you will see that the cutting faces of the seal lips really do face toward the green side, and that this must be facing out to prevent air from being sucked in. oldman Posted December 2, 2005 Author Report Posted December 2, 2005 Thank you sandman. You have put my mind at ease with regards to this concern. Quote
fast87 Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 damn i knew i screwed that up somehow...i don't remember my replacement seal having a spring on both sides...damn u guys i gotta adjust my timing anyway, so looks like i'll be checking out that seal, findout out that it's in wrong and replacing it with another new one and put it in right, lol thanks for helping out the helper ~Mark~ Quote
ssanddemon Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 I hope you don't have to pull the seal, fast87. It has a lip that runs around the center of the outside of the seal which fits into a matching indent in the case. I did manage to pull mine by drilling holes thru it and running sheet metal screws thru to push off of the bearing, thereby pressing the seal out. But it was no fun, and the book says you have to split cases. I just want you to know, it could be a can of worms better left for another day. Quote
fast87 Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 thanks for the heads up, i had my entire engine down late last summer and forgot it had the little lip to hold it in...i'll just check to make sure it's in right, and if it isn't then i realyl doubt it's leaking cuz she runs MINT, a little rich but both pistons look exactly the same on top, so probably not leaning out the left side...thanks again ~Mark~ Quote
