hey,

ive got an 02 banshee thats been sitting a while . I unstuck the cylinders, cleaned the carbs (actually ended up cleaning them about 3 times), flushed the tank, and cleaned the airbox. After inspecting the reeds, and taking note of the 130psi per cylinder compression, i figured things would be set. There are no blockages in the exhaust either. My problem is, the engine will only start with motivation (carb clean, or the like down the cylinders.... i know..i know) and then when it does, it just doesnt feel right, and backfires out of the left cylinder randomly. Ive had many banshees and this one just doesnt have the grunt a typical banshee has.... anyone have any ideas? the machine is 100% stock. thanks guys,

1st question.... did you turn the gas on?

2nd question... did you check the plugs for spark?

3rd question... are the carbs put back together properly? After cleaning the carbs once I didnt tighten my pilot jet and it fell out producing similar results to what you are having.

hehe, yeah. Im a race team mechanic for dirtbikes, so im really familiar with 2 stroke design, and wrenching in general. Ive done all the typical trouble shooting. The backfiring leads me to believe it may be the TORS. exactly how do you d/c this stuff? i disconnected the box above the left cylinder, and the caps on the top of the carb tops.. it seemed at though the revs were hanging up (even though the carbs, and slides were operating properly. I made the mistake of swapping the carb tops accidentally on my first shee, and know what that feels like. this is different. Its consistent in power, but just sluggish, and doesnt even sound right.

when i flushed the tank, i specifically bought gas for it, so the premix is only a couple days old now...

I know... service manuals are nice. I'm convinced its Tors, and wanted to make sure i had disconnected it properly... Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Check the plug caps. Make sure they are not jumping inside. My caps were old and the spark was leaking out at low rpms, and so one cylender would miss. Then it would kick in and seam ok.

Backfireing on a twostroke is lean on the jetting, unless there is some spark issue.

Make sure your reeds are seating good on the cages too

yeah.. ive went over the typical 2 stroke stuff. jetting is spot on, so its not that. Im pretty sure its electrical. Going to verify i disconnected tors properly this weekend, and then go from there. thanks anyway guys

it is not the tors. the tors would cause it to not rev above something rediculous like 2,000 RPM. check to see if the tip of your spark plug is lose, causing a ppor connection. better yet, just throw some new ones in there for the hell of it. try this first, its the little things that will drive you crazy!!
