Banshee Pilot Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 I've always used Bel Ray Gear Saver tranny fluid in 80W form. I was looking on Rocky Mountain ATV today and noticed they had 75 and 85W. Is there that big of a difference between these three weights of oil? What are the pros/cons of each? Any ideas? -Craig Quote
05bansh Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 I really have no idea about pros or cons. I use the 80w. Its the thickness of the oil. 75w being thinner- 80w being a little thicker, and so on. Quote
Banshee Pilot Posted July 13, 2005 Author Report Posted July 13, 2005 I guess I might have been a little vague in my question. I know that the three differ in thickness . . . but I didn't think there was very much difference between 75W and 85W. I only thought that Bel Ray made 80W. Does anyone use a different weight other than 80W in their tranny? -Craig Quote
Banshee~ Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 Im pretty sure they just started making the 75w and 85w, but me and my friends have always ran 80w gearsaver. Quote
fast87 Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 i run 10-30 or 10-40wt, why would you run 80wt??? to me it's extra drag on the tranny gears, you're probably losing HP with it...plus the yamaha manual recommends regular ol 30 or 40wt motor oil...why use thicker oil?? i have had zero tranny problems, i just tore my whole engine down and see no signs of abnormal wear on any gears or shifting mechanisms...also i hear a lot about running type F automatic transmission fluid, what's the advantage of that?? Thanks ~Mark~ Quote

Thanks ~Mark~ 392036[/snapback] If I recall, f type was developed by or for Ford to increase the friction in the clutch plates. If you use it it will make your clutch grab more or too much. I read this in a 'temporary fix for slipping clutch' article in an MX mag ages ago.... I would do it only it if it was time to ride with friends and I had nothing else to try to keep it from slipping. Quote
