80overShee Posted July 3, 2005 Report Posted July 3, 2005 So I was riding the Silver Lake Sand Dunes on Friday (first day of 3 day trip) and after about an hour of riding my pipes start blowing some blue smoke that smelled of motor oil, not premix. So I run back to the trailer to check everything out and my oil level was low, but not drastically. So I figure maybe a small seal leak, no biggie, I'll rebuild when I get home. Apparently it was larger than I thought and after I refilled the oil it all went to the crankcase ( I assume) and drained the clutch cover and tranny completely. I noticed this by the feel of a clutch that had no grab at all. Get back to the truck after I thought I had smoked my clutches and worn them out since they were already in need of replacement. Pull the clutch cover and hundreds of tiny pieces of clutch fiber come out in the oil.... One of the fibers literally shattered. Time to split the cases (second time this month) and check that seal and get all those fragments out.........FRIGGIN BANSHEE! Oh, I have about 325 high-res pics from "The Dunes" of some seriously wicked Banshees doing drags and high climbs and all sorts of other stuff if someone could point me to a place where I can host lots of pics, I'll link em up. This 10 yr old on a bone stock 05' Banshee was spanking everyone that wasn't running alcohol, it was cool as hell! Quote
Rare Scottish Tree Badger Posted July 3, 2005 Report Posted July 3, 2005 So I was riding the Silver Lake Sand Dunes on Friday (first day of 3 day trip) ... I'm on the "splitting cases twice in a month" aswell. ... It sucks! Did you put a new crank seal in and grease it up when you put it together again the last time? Rare. Quote
wesw Posted July 3, 2005 Report Posted July 3, 2005 link for pic www.photobucket.com would love to see your pics by the way Quote
broke Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 I've seen that 10 year old. That bike cooks with a 60lb jockey on it. Quote
80overShee Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 I think I might even have a 'photobucket' thing already It'll be done! I'm splittin the cases tomorrow. Woulda done it today but its "beer and blow shit up" day. Although I did so some stunt riding at a friends before the fireworks and did some wicked stuff on a 250ex...dummy running my camera is.....well...... a dummy. There were 3 of us doing a stunt show in the road and he didnt get but about 5 seconds on video.....pathetic. My friend was racing his fresh bought and just rebuilt Blaster against the 250ex. He was getting blown outta the water at the holeshot but would walk it down. He was all disappointed. "Gimme that thing, I'll show you how to put a Honda in its place", I'd get 6 lengths outta the hole on it and I weigh 40lbs more than him! I reaffirm the saying "Its all in the rider". He was impressed then, and really happy when I blew the 400ex out by 2 lengths outta the hole, got walked down though, geared too low. Ya, that lil kid on that Banshee RIPS, I have video of him blowin out stoker Shee's, full drag YFZ's, 520 big bored 450R's and a few custom built three wheelers. Quote
80overShee Posted July 5, 2005 Author Report Posted July 5, 2005 Silver Lake Sand Dunes trip here is a few of the pics I have uploaded, there are still like 250 more but it takes FOREVER to upload that many so I am doin it in steps Quote
80overShee Posted July 7, 2005 Author Report Posted July 7, 2005 I figured it all out... ...I feel like Sherlock Holmes after looking at this one. Here is the run down. A few weeks back when I was rebuilding (didnt replace clutch) I found a broken fiber. On a budget , I only replaced that fiber and went on my merry way. This weekend up at the dunes, the bike shifted pretty hard, clutch felt funny and the 3rd to 4th was almost impossible in a drag. I didn't think anything serious of it, just needed to replace the clutch since it was moderately worn. Then tranny oil (5w30) smoke starts coming from the exhaust (right side first, then left) and blowing into the carbs/reeds. I try to make it back to the truck and the clutch gives out entirely. I cracked the clutch case to see a fiber entirely shattered and spread throughout the tranny and I put it up for the weekend......here is what I figure happened. Let this be a lesson to all who are on a budget........WAIT or you might have to be towed in by a damned Honda...what an insult A fiber broke while I was drag racing and a piece or multiple pieces lodged themselves into the forks and drum. After a few minutes of running hard in the drags a few more pieces hit the crank seal and destroyed it. The tranny oil entered the crank case and was burned off/spit out of exhaust and intake. On the way back to the truck, it burned off enough oil that the fibers got hot and glazed over. Once enough oil escaped the rest of the fiber was ejected (after I ragged on it tryin to get it back) and the clutch gave out entirely. After looking at the whole thing, this is my best guess (whew, no cracked case) even though the guy who gave me direction in building it, since it was my first 2-stroke told me there is no way it could be the seal since it was seated correctly and brand new. The seal was trashed from a fiber. Must have had 4-5 oz of 5w30 in the crank case. Now that I have spent about $150 on gaskets, clutch parts (Barnett Kevlar) and a few other little thing it should be back in running shape tomorrow. I just wrote a novel. ......I'll make it a magazine instead by postin the pics tomorrow on my "photobucket" page with all the SLSD pics. http://photobucket.com/albums/b16/BansheeNUB/Silver%20Lake Quote
