Anyone got one of the old (around '86-'88) Yamaha 4-Zinger's? I got one for the kid from a guy, and I can't seem to get the thing to run like it should. It surges, and seems like it loads up too easily. But the plug looks perfect every time I pull it? Any ideas?

The old Badger motors (the same engine now used in the Raptor 80) have a problem with the valves going out of wack (clearance). making them damn near impossible to start (or keep running). I don't know if it's the same motor used in the Zinger, or if thats the problem your having, but here's the clearances just in case....

Intake 0.002 - 0.004 Thousandths

Exhaust 0.003 - 0.005 Thousandths

Zinger is a 60cc 2 stroker.  It seems like a carb issue, but I can't get it jetted out.  I am thinking it could possibly be the reeds?

Yea, it very well could be old nasty busted up reeds. I don't know much, if anything, about them there things, but I hope you get it figured out. Funny, I was just getting on to start looking for a gas quad for my "little one".

Let us know man.

i used to ride one of those little things as a kid and i seem to remember it used to feel like a power surge once in a while,,im not positive but i think it was the pipe causing it to do this..i do know the pipe would get clogged for some reason and it had to be taken off and cleaned out but like i said it was a long time ago so im not 100% sure thats right...i also had problems with the fuel lines on that bike..it wouldnt get air into the tank and would cut in and out too

I took the baffle (it was plugged full of carbon) out of my boys TriZinger, it helped it alot. I also put a new carb on the thing.. You shoud be able to get a carb for like $150 at yamaha if needed...

Has it been converted over to manual mixing of the gas? Make sure all carb holes are plugged if so..

give the plug wire a good inspection if it's old you gotta replace the whole coil on those, I used a coil off of a 87 YZ80 on my boys triZ..

These little 60's rock... The lil bastards a fun ride for me.. Even more so for the little ones!!

Yea, the surge I know of, but this is more pronounced than the normal "crispening"

that seems to happen on these bikes. It still has the oil injection. It works, So why mess with it..... The baffle was the first item to be tossed. I drained and cleaned the fuel tank, as it had a TON of shit in it. I also noticed that in the fuel inlet in the carb, there is a TINY hole for the fuel to come in, and it kept getting clogeed. Hence the reason for the tank coming off. The air in the tank, that is actually vapor locking. It happened, and I drilled and tapped the cap for a fitting, and I vented it myself. It seems to be running better, but still not up to his buddies tri-zinger. I will have to dig deeper. There is more power, somewhere....
