ANGUS Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 (edited) I have just purchased a 2001 Banshee that has been riden for maybe 20 hours if that and some of it was by me. I only paid 1,800 for it because the friend (changes his mind to much) didn't want to pay for it anymore. It has been in his garage sitting for a few months (too busy putting a blower on his 04 chevy) so now it probably has not been started in a while. What do I need to do to clean it up and getting it going smoothly. I know I am gonna changes the plugs, all fluids and clean the carbs. I also just ordered myself the manual that all of you refer too. I need to know what type of oils for engine and tranny, lubes to use on frame etc., coolant and plugs and anything thing else you can think of and where to order them. I know cars and hotrods just never owned a ATV. Parents would't let me have a ATV but I would have a 10 second chevelle at 18. Go figure? Thanks for any help! Edited March 3, 2005 by ANGUS Quote
bigboybanshee Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 Welcome to the HQ!! I run Bel-Ray MC-1 2-stroke oil in the engine mixed at 50:1. For the tranny I use Bel-Ray 80W gear oil...Coolant, I use engine ice. It dropped the overall temp my banshee ran by 20 degrees. Plugs, you typically want to run NGK BR8ES. Be sure to do a quick check before each ride of all fluids, make sure all nuts and bolts are tight (as well as your chain) and you should be good to go...I might be forgetting a few things but I'm sure others will bring them up... Oh yeah, most of my things I pick up from the dealership, but a couple good sites are.... Rocky Mountain ATV <-----click here and for jets... Rage Performance <-----click here Be sure to check out the sponsors on the site, they usually give you a discount for being a member Quote
ANGUS Posted March 3, 2005 Author Report Posted March 3, 2005 Thanx for the info. Is that Ice you refer too made from Royal Purple? In my Firehawk all I use is RP for engine tranny and the ice aditive for the radiator. Quote

Duninshee Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 This is what I use: Mix Oil: Klotz Supertechniplate 40:1 Trans Oil: Bel-Ray 80w Gear Oil Coolant: Cyclelogic Engine Ice Plugs: NGK BR8ES Chain Lube: Maxima Synthetic Chain Guard Crystal Clear (Don't Buy This. Dirt and sand sticks to it and cakes everything.) Soap to wash : Just car wash soap But other people use Simple Green with good results. Filter Cleaner: K&N filter cleaner and oil. Hope this helps!!! RNBRAD Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 Tranny- Mobil 1 15w-50 Pre-Mix- Mobil 1 Mx2t Chassis Lube and bearings- Any with moly additive or Mystik JT-8 Coolant-Prestone 25/75 and Redline water wetter (my preference), or engine ice. For the best possible cooling use redline ww and 100% distilled water, will actually cool better than engine ice. Only downfall which I don't see a problem with is your boiling point is around 250 vs 265 with 50/50 antifreeze. No freeze protection at all though. Just drain in winter or switch to glycol based product for freeze protection. Chain lube- Maxima chain wax, though I prefer just a few squirts of wd-40 occasionally if you ride dunes. Brake fluid- Valvoline synthetic Quote
Cotton eyed Joe Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 I run Prestone 50/50 in the radiator, and run Valvoline in the crank case because its the only engine oil I can find that has no friction modifiers. I dont feel like running Yamalube yet. Before I ride I'll check bolts and nuts, check for leaks around seal areas on the engine, and snap the throttle to make sure its not going to hang up on me. I'll typically put a pump or two of high temp grease in the pivots every 3rd or 4th ride, and before storing it for the winter to drive out any moisture. Quote
ANGUS Posted March 4, 2005 Author Report Posted March 4, 2005 Thanks, I will print this to keep around. We really don't have a winter here in Houston, Tx. so I can pretty much ride year round. It will definatley be kept clean and up to spec on maintenance because I am an anal person when it come to my car and I will be the same with this. Quote
sredish Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 You can do a search and find more info than you'd ever need to read. I ran Castor 927 for a few years and recently switched to Silkolene pre-mix. I used Silkolene Comp Gear for the motor/tranny area. Maxima chain wax for the chain. It doesn't matter what brake fluid you use, they're all about the same, just be sure to use the right DOT #. I remember having a bottle of EBC around somewhere. Damn newbies... Quote
