JARE77 Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 I had a guy that owns a shop around here tell me that if you powdercoat your shock springs they will become weak and eventually break. I know alot of people have done it on here. Does anyone know more about this,Dunedemon maybe? My springs are sitting at the powdercoaters right now waiting to be done. Any help or info would be great thanx! Quote
Indubitably Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 They won't become weak and break if you were chroming them, then they may become weaker, but i'm not sure if you would notice it. Quote
RNBRAD Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 The only thing I have ever seen become weaker with a PC job is rims on sport bikes. That is if they are not heated to the proper temps they will become more brittle and crack. Have seen this many times with PC'rs that don't know what they are doing. As far as steel springs, there should be absolutely no problems. Quote
JARE77 Posted January 21, 2005 Author Report Posted January 21, 2005 Thanx guys for the input, I was pretty sure that the temperatures used in powdercoating would not effect the steel. I just cant beleive this guy would say something like that. He was probably trying to put a scare in me hoping that he could sell me on something instead! Quote
DUNEDEMON Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 No problems with powder coating the springs Jare, we have ours coated.... Quote
04ShEeLE Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 a lot of import tuners heat their springs to lower the car. In the powder coating process they are put under a tremendous amount of heat to bake on the coating. I'm not sure about them breaking, but I can see that they may sag a little more. Just paint them and they will be fine. Quote
Ducman Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 The only way I could see that being true is if they were heated up to a lot higher temp than 400 degrees and cooled off very fast. Quote
joshv5.0 Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 powdercoating doesn't make anything weaker, it just doesn't get hot enough Quote
Gargamel Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 ..... In the powder coating process they are put under a tremendous amount of heat ....... 310050 What tremendous heat you talking about?? PC is something like 400 for like 15-20 Min. That tempature will not harden the springs and you will be safe pc'ing them!!! Quote
BdBanshee Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 Works shocks come with PC'ed springs, and I have had my springs PC'ed many times, no problems. Quote
RNBRAD Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 powdercoating doesn't make anything weaker, it just doesn't get hot enough 310223 Except for cast aluminum. Quote
dogboystoy Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 (edited) I agree, 400 deg. isnt enough to make a difference on your springs. I am bet that 400 degrees may do something, but nothing that would effect your performance. It si possible that the PC guy was just trying to be safe, so that you wouldnt come back to him if your springs broke. I dont think he was trying to rip you. JARE77 Posted January 23, 2005 Author Report Posted January 23, 2005 Thanx alot for all the replies I feel safer hearing all your opinions! It wasnt my PCer that said this it was an owner of an atv performance shop in my area. Anyhow I am going to get the big spring done black and the two smaller springs candy red,Should look pretty tight Quote
