I am stumped as to what my next mod should be for my fourwheeler. I ride mostly trails and am starting to get into mx. I have dmc 916's, K N clampons, Pro design Cool Head with 21 cc domes. I don't plan on becoming a racer but I do want it to preform very well. I am going to order new shocks and have my rear rebuilt. So what should I do for more power.

What year is your quad? If it's anywhere close to needing a top end, I'd say do it or just a hone and new rings and get some porting. Portwork will bring in the real power, everything will be babyshit, maybe 1 or 2 hp here and there. Porting is equivalent to going from stock to pipes.

Otherwise:

Timing

Ignition

Single Carb setup (for low/mid & mx riding)

Vforce Reeds

NOS :P

I second the porting. Tons of power can be had, but you will also need some larger carbs to get the best performance from your porting. Porting was the most noticeable power improvement I've had, even over adding aftermarket pipes.

Isn't it Tim Gorr who does the MX/Woods porting that everyone here likes?  How long do you think it takes to get your cylinders back?  It's $200 right?

My bike is an '03. If I was to port it is there a difference in a Mx port or a trail port.

The definitions of "trail" and "mx" and "woods" and all of them really depend on the machinist. In some ways, they all tend to port a little differently. Best thing to do is to contact the person you want to have doing the porting, say..... Eric Gorr, and then discuss the different porting options with them.

I'd say a trail port would almost be a clean up & polish, and then mx would be equal to a woods port, nothing major, but a nice open up and cleaning. I have Gorr's wood port and it's awesome. Unbelievably smooth, and so much low/midrange (in part to the pipes), and others have used that port with top end pipes, and they are said to just scream there also. I run a 16/41 regularly when I race...in the woods, and can easily pull a 17/41 if need be, so it's got some ass behind it.

Here's Gorr's wood port:
