Yaxy Posted January 6, 2005 Report Posted January 6, 2005 I am in the process of finishign my exhaust flanges for the RZ. I have already drilled the holes in the base plate that I am using for the 1.75" tube that I bought at the mufler shop and just wanted to varify with those that have done this if the 1.75"OD pipe is correct for Rocket Pipes. I have already fit them up to my FMF's and they are perfectly snug with the o'rings in the pipes. I have never seen the flanges on the Rocket pipes so I do not know if they have O'rings. Through my limited experience with other pipes I have seen that the non O'ring versions are a bit larger on the ID and I don't want more than the standard play allowed between the exhaust flnage and where the Rockets slide over. Also I used 1/4" plate and 1/8 tubing. Does that appear Ok. Thanks Chris Quote
Yaxy Posted January 8, 2005 Author Report Posted January 8, 2005 Common guys, I know there are a few of you out there that have done this. Chris Quote
Meat Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 So your wondering if Rockets have O-rings, Id pm Minkia38 if he doesnt reply here. He sells the Rocket pipes. If the rockets dont have the O-rings, and they move on the flange, you could probably stop em from leaking with a little extra "Ultra Copper" exhaust sealer. You'd think the o-ringed pipes would have the same ID as non o-ring pipes. How did you make the loops for the pipe spring clamps ? Quote
Yaxy Posted January 8, 2005 Author Report Posted January 8, 2005 (edited) Thanks for the info on the O'rings, It looks like I have the right OD tubing. Regarding the bracket for the upper pipe spring I thought of that, but until last week I didn't have a solid idea. My plan is to leave the top of the flange plate flat in that area and a buddy recommended that I take a hook and weld it to the top of the plate. The hook he suggested was the one that you find on drum brakes on a car. That little hook that pushes throught the backining plate that you slide the brake pad over. Right now I think that is a great idea and the direction I am heading towrads. Do the thicknesses of the plate and tube i metioned in the my first post seem accurate? broke Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 A friend of mine built mine with parts from a muffler shop. He got a flat flange that was close enough to the right fit, and we just ground the bolt holes to fit. Once we had the actual tube inside the flange, we test fit everything because thew tube come off the flange at a weird angle. It needs to be turned a few degrees, but not much. We just welded some washers on there to fit the pipes spring too. I just went to an Ace hardware with the weasurements of the top spring that I needed and searched until I found the right one. To tell you the truth, mine fit's so damn tight that I forget to put the springs back on quite often. I did put some high temp Orange RTV on everything up there just in case. I do have rocket pipes on mine and they do take O-rings but I think that was already cleared up. Quote
Yaxy Posted January 8, 2005 Author Report Posted January 8, 2005 broke, I tried to do what you did in terms of I went to a salvage snowmobile shop but they did no have anything exact and at that point I just decided to make my own. Took 1/4 plate and took the hols saw and the first one took me 30 minutes to drill through but the 2nd one took 15. Had to then girind a bit more out with the dye grinder so the 1.75'OD pipe fit snug. I am making a third flange this weekend and then giving to my buddy to weld her up for me. I will then get the band saw fired up and cut the flanges to be a bit larger than the gasket. I will fianlize the lenth of the tube when I get down the road. Thanks for the washer Idea, I will keep that in mind. Chris Quote
Meat Posted January 9, 2005 Report Posted January 9, 2005 Here the exhaust flanges on mine. washers used for the pipe spring loop. works good and looks good. Quote
Yaxy Posted January 9, 2005 Author Report Posted January 9, 2005 Meet, Thanks for the pictures. . One thing I thought about today, I have 2 tubes cut and 2 flanges drilled and what I started to think about is if the tubes coming out of the flanges need to be at a 90 degree angle or not which I am assiuming is yes. I do not have the pipes yet nor have I mounted the motor into a frame so I do not know the answer and I do not want to weld at a 90 degree angle if the angle needs to be different. Can anyoine shed some light on this. Chris Quote
Minkia38 Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 hello! i did the rz stuff too - just remember that on an rz350, there are SEALS that go on the flange, its kinda like a crush disc, gotta get them from the Yammy dealer - very leak proof! Quote
Yaxy Posted January 13, 2005 Author Report Posted January 13, 2005 Thanks Minkia, I do have the gaskets (Hard compound) that go between the flanges and teh cylinder. Off the subject, Can I use all the guts of a RZ motor and put them in banshee crankcases? Chris Quote
broke Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 For the most part, Yes. Trans out of an RZ doesn't have The best ratios for a quad, but the shift forks make for better shifting. It will all fit fine, though. Quote
Yaxy Posted January 14, 2005 Author Report Posted January 14, 2005 Thanks Broke, Just trying to confirm this. Since the RZ motor had so few miles on it everything internal looks perfect. I don't want to put alot of money into the crank, cylinders and head into banshee cases and something go wrong and POW. Since RZ's are rare I would like to keep it RZ as much posible. Unfortunately I am not going to be able to do that with the cases. I thought about the gearing and thought I could compormise with the external sprokets. It is pretty much going to be riden on open areas but will see some trails. The RZ is going to be more like a Miss Daisy. It probably won't be ridden much since I really like my 89 shee and will be ordering a 2006 in June. But it is different and that is what it is about for me. Chris Quote
