i've been told that if i port my engine i will literally see the gas level in my tank drop to the bottom before my eyes.

A bunch of friends and me do a lot of long desert trips, and they say that if i port the engine my gas won't last for too long, and i will be forced to cut the trip short.

how much of this is true??

Any time you increase flow you will loose fuel mileage. With my ported motor I could only ride a total of 12 (duning) miles before I was on fumes. On my stroker it's even less but on the stroker I have much larger carbs.

My porting job from Patriot Racing is their Trail Spec Porting. This is primarily a blue-printing and polishing job to correct factory flaws with only minor porting changes. I also have their full head deck and squish mod which balances the two combustion chambers to have equal dome shapes correcting another factory potential defect and increasing compression to equiv of 21cc domes. These mild modifications have little effect on fuel milage. On the other hand if you go for top end dune porting and run wide open your milage will suffer more for sure.

I can make it from the far end of glamis to china wall and back and still have enough gas to pla on the hill with my 12-port and 33mil carbs. if anyone knows how far that is to give youa good idea.

Justin thats the 12 mile round trip I almost ran out of gas on. I didn't even go up the hill more than once.

If you get top end porting and big carbs it will reduce your mileage a fair amount but not by more than about 1/4 to 1/3 less if you ride it similar to the way you did before. If you get one of those grab bars with spare gas can you should be able to make it the same distance as before. Maybe your friend just dont want you to be kickin their ass. Let me guess, they ride 4 strokes? Also, I have heard a lot of people swear that a single carb setup is a lot more fuel effiecient.

hahahhahaha no friend of mine rides a 4 stroke, no we all ride banshees other wise they would be trying to stay with the pack. i contacted trinity they suggested a stage III porting, but it sounds like too much. I only want a little more power not a fire breathing methanol monster.

I refill almost everytime i go back to camp that way i dont have to worry about it, expecially since i dont have reserve now. As far as mileage i noticed a difference after being ported but i have a heavy thumb also.

If you're worried that the Stage III porting might be too much, you could go for a milder port like the Stage II (which is generally used for all-around riding, which sounds like what you need).
