Seen this question flying around lately, I wasn't for sure and have seen answers both ways. Contacted Rciky Stator and they said not a problem using higher rated bulbs than the wattage output of the stator. They said it will not cause any damage just your light output will be yellow.

It will make him happy when you have to order a stator from him.

I think he's a little more respectable than that.

Yeah, I also contacted Ricky Stator and he confirmed the 55w lights will run on the stock stator, but will be yellowish, not bright white. I also heard that the wiring may heat up and damage stuff over time, so I am gonna put the stock lights back on for now and then upgrade the stator some time in the future,

Thanks to all for the help

That's more likely to happen with a high output stator due to the extra current and stock guage wiring.

Do you really want your stator to run at full capacitiy all the time though. I think that's what burns them up. Whenever you have a higher current bulb on there, it's going to make the stator work at full capacity. Not over capacity, but full capacity. I think that's what it boils down to.

Well I don't think people run their lights all the time, but good point, I'm not too familiar with technology of stators like I am aftermarket alternators. I do believe the stock stator operates at full capacity or close to it, when the lights are on, does it not?

I think it does if the stator is truely at 60watts. They may over wire it a bit to keep it from overheating. It's just like the example of small wire and a big stator you gave except the small wire is on the stator with a stock one and being maxed out with 110 watts wanted. The higher watt bulb is less resistance and what makes the stator work harder and warmer. It's like trying to run 2ohm speakers on a 4ohm amp so I'm not sure you can't damage the stator. Did you talk to Ricky or someone else there.

I just think regardless of the circumstance a stator should be able to put out its rated output max power with no degredation of life expectrancy. They should be tested and rated accordingly as not to shorten their life expectancy or at least last as long as "the normal" life expectancy of a stator should. I know that heat kills anything over time but should be able to expect a reasonable amount of use out of the unit. If running these things at max power kills them rather quickly, then they are designed and made poorly. JMO Yes I did talk to Ricky Stator.

If you talked to Ricky, then it's right. And yes you are right. They should be able to take the heat... that's what they are made for.

Just my .02 but these things obviously wear out even with the stock lights. I've already replaced mine with a Ricky Stator. They wouldn't have a business if the were bulletproof from the factory. I would run the lights you want to run if it damages your stator over time so be it replace it with the high output. If you prefer the light output of the stockers to the aftermarket since you don't have the power to light 'em up fully then stay with the stockers until you get the cash for the high output stator.

i had 55w bulbs in my shee when I got it. You can do it but the light absolutely sucks ass. I switched out to 35w on my 2nd trip out, had to be at LEAST twice as bright with the correct wattage bulbs. Not an issue anymore...ordering my 200w stator in a couple weeks! :headbang:

i have a stock replacement stator from r.s and i also bought their "hid look" bulbs. they work kick ass. they are brighter than the stockers. a lot brighter. no more shitty yellow light. not too bad for like 8 bucks each.

Do you ever work yo?

I was wondering the same thing about you and half the members in the forum. I only work 3 days a week but I work 12 hour shifts. So that gives me plenty of BHQ time. Plus I have a puter at work and they don't allow games on the hard drive, this should be a good way around that. :headbang:
