racer714 Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Hey everyone, I want to stud tires for winter, my question is how safe is it? Can you still ride in front ans around poeps without the fear of throwing a screw off and hitting them? Has anyone heard of this or had it happen? thanks in advance for any replies! Quote
locogato11283 Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 i use 1/2" sheet metal screws from westlakes hardware. i have a few hundred screws in each tire. Quote
Flyin_Shee Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 I ran ice screws in my Holeshot MX's and none of them came out on the ice, only time they came out was when I did a 1st-5th gear burnout on blacktop trying to drag . This winter I'm taking those same tires (all of the screws are worn out so I can't take them out and I'm too poor to buy new tires) and putting studs in them, probably will be anywhere from an inch to two inches long. I should get plenty of traction with those. A friend of mine ran ice studs in his tires on his 416ex, he had it geared up as much as possible and could still pull the front end up in 3rd and 4th gear! Quote
red ore Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 locogato11283, those are just regular sheetmetal screws? Ive had ones like that but they have the little carbide tips on them, but they are more expensive! If you say they still hook up good, I'll buy them instead of the carbide ones........ Thanks, Ande ICE RACING 2005!!!! Quote
Wallynut Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 I've used just regular sheet metal screws, they work. You can loose some when riding, never had anyone say they've been hit with one. Most that I ride with, know better then to get right up behind me cause they are gonna get hit with something(aka rocks). I never lost them riding on ice, but threw some riding trails where the snow was lacking, roads and tree roots can be culprits. Quote

Thanks, Ande ICE RACING 2005!!!! 283835[/snapback] yep just plain old sheet metal screws. they come in a box of 100 for about 5 bucks. theyll easily hook enough to pull the front up on the ice. i run around 250-300 per tire in the rear. y2kbanshee9187 Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 These screws will not ruin your tires? How hard are they to get in the tire? Quote
Flyin_Shee Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 I use carpenter screws, basically same thing. They are not hard at all to get into the tire, just VERY time consuming. As long as you have good tread on the tire and put it into the tread, it shouldn't ruin your tire. Quote
nater006 Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 How long are they? Loco, I'm running the same tires on mine right now and they don't hook up all that well on the farm land I ride (my cut Turf Tamers do.. ) so guessing a set of those Trekkers studded would work pretty nicely especially in a few inches of snow.. Just wondering how long the screws are you stuffed in. DId you put anything on them, like the vulcanizing compound, or just... went to town on 'em with a drill and box of screws? Also, I have a set of Razrs but they have very little (3/16" or so) tread left on them. Doubt those will dig into the snow very well though.. Quote
