Hi everyone...great site! i just made a deal on a 00 banshee with a transmission problem, and am hoping someone can help. What happens is that it won't go into neutral ( keeps going forward but will free wheel or start using the clutch). If you try to put it into gear ( any gear ) It will shut down the engine. I'm not very familliar with these so I hope that someone who is can help. Could this be gears? shift fork? I'm debating on tackleing it myself depending on what is involved. Can you get to these parts without splitting the case? I'm not sure where to start, or just take it to a shop. Thanks in advance, LeRoy

If you put the trans in neutral, it will still be in a forward gear. The only way to to start it is to pull the clutch in. After releasing the clutch, it will go forward ( with the trans in neutral ) If you shift it into any other gear and release the clutch, it will shut the engine down. I've tried adjusting the clutch cable, but that doesn't help. I got this bike from my nephew, he said everything worked fine until he rode it home, shut it down, then tried to ride again. Thanks, LeRoy

Thanks for the replies, I pulled the engine off and started "nosing" around...good thing I did. I found that there is alot more wrong with this motor than just the trans. Pistons, cylinders, head ect. All hammered. I hate to back out on a deal, but I think the banshee is going back where it came from. I was going to trade one of my cars for it, but.... thanks again, LeRoy

Sounds like someone ran it without tranny oil and welded a couple gears onto the shafts. Pull the oil drain plug and see what color the tranny oil is and how much actually comes out (check the dipstick and see if it shows any oil on there first).

As far as the other issues go beyond the trans, most of those are easy fixes depending on how bad it is. I will assume it's not that bad considering it was running when you pulled it apart. Regular two stroke maintenance consists of new pistons and maybe a bore. Even if the head is trashed they can be had for around $10 on Ebay or check with NYUK, he always has plenty of them laying around. Good luck
