jasonsb Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 I'm getting my bike ready for Glamis. My last trip was a disaster! I spent the whole weekend changing jets, needle positions, and air screw positions. It was very hard to start. I checked the plugs after a quick run and they were white. I think they turned white because it was hard to start. Pilots are 27.5. Glamis doesn't sell pilots so that's what I had to run all weekend. The strange thing is that the bike ran better with the needle one clip from pointed end. Does this make sense? Should I go up to 32.5 or 30 on the pilots. The mains are 360. I can't get it to run right to do a 6th gear main jet check. Quote
SDD Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 With stock carbs you will have a hell of a time getting your ported motor to run correctly. Make sure you do not have an air leak. How much time did you have on those spark plugs before checking the jetting? Quote
Banchetta Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 Hard to start when cold or warm? Or both? W/ the choke or w/o? and what do you mean by it won't run right for wot test. What do you call won't run right? Makes perfect sense that it'll run stronger w/ the needle raised, I'd try the closest clip to the taper and go from there. You'll either gain more like you did from the 3rd to the 4th setting or it'll fall on its face, but you'll at least know your at max power... Quote

I have read and heard that a ported motor with aftermarket reeds will run better with the needle one clip leaner (lowering the needle). My plugs were brand new and I couldn't get it to start with and without the choke pulled. I had to raise the slides way up in order to get it to idle. I ran o.k. but the plugs were super white. They were white before I could even run it w.o.t. The bike would run good if I gradually gave it gas. When I tried a drag race take off, it would fall on it's face. Banchetta Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 (edited) I'd go up at least 2 sizes on the pilots to start...the needle clip will vary depending on the pilot, so you have to get the pilot dialed in first since you far off, then get the needle height adjusted after... FIRST BANSHEE Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 I would increase the pilots a couple sizes, should help your holeshot and starting. Also i would increase the main 1-2 sizes, should help you pull sixth gear. Quote
jasonsb Posted October 7, 2004 Author Report Posted October 7, 2004 Thanks for all the advice. I just installed 32.5 pilots and put the needle one slot from the tapered end. I will do a few test runs this weekend in the desert. One more question: What would cause a bike to fall on its face racing up a hill, but run fine on a flat surface? Could it be the float height? or just the jetting..not allowing it to run with any torque. Quote
Banchetta Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 The more of a load, the more fuel it takes, so I'd say your lean...either that or you have electrical problems....check all your connections and plug wires.. Quote
