Hey Guys, Might be a long post but I want you to have as much detail as possible. The last couple times out on the Shee it would die under hard acceleration, but would restart after about 15 minutes. Now it is totally dead. I have checked the key switch and run switch and both are good. My stator ohm meter readings match Clymer's perfect. My coil is good across the primary side but is open between the - of the primary and the spark plug boot. Clymers says it should be between 4k & 7k. I called Ricky Stator to discuss and he said that even some new coils will show open from the - term to the plug boot. I do have a resistance of about 22k from one boot to the other through the coil. Then there is the CDI. All the wiring looks good and not shorted or corroded. This bike is an 89 that previously ran perfect. I have installed new NGK BR8ES plugs and it made no difference. One thing I am confused about is that when I hold the plug against the bare metal head bolt I see some spark about every third kick but not every kick. This seems like it would be the problem.

Looking for some guidence on which of the three components to chase first, coil, stator, CDI. I know the stator can go open when hot but it measures perfect but wont start the bike at all.

I have read Ben's Electrical FAQ and it was very helpful getting this far.

Thanks in advance for your feedback. banghead

I had a very similar problem and mine was a short in the wiring on the key switch. The insulation had worn down to the wire and it would break the connection inconsistently. I looked over the wiring for days before I found it..."sounds" like your problem but there is no telling. I'll think about it and see if I can come up with something. :)

Just from the symptoms, it sounds MOST like either a failed coil, or as bigboy said a short in the wiring harness somewhere. If your ground isn't making good contact, or the wires have rubbed the frame, or a wire is loose on one of the connector terminals, you might get that intermittant spark.

If it was me, I'd start by taking the coil off and seeing if a shop will bench test it. I think even the Clymer says that testing the coil with an ohmmeter isn't very definitive, that like the CDI swapping it out is the best way to know for certain, BUT if you can get someone to put it on a tester that should be about the best way to test it.

If that's ok, I'd go over that wiring harness with a fine tooth comb, if every inch of wire is intact and every terminal is secure, chances are it's either the stator or CDI. If the stator tests ok and you get no spark, it's probably the CDI. The bad news is that it could still be the stator. Since I've had both fail, best I can tell you is that it sounds more like the stator (mine had a broken solder joint, that would make contact if you held it right) and less like the CDI (mine gave no prior indication of failure, it just up and quit...2 miles from home...all uphill). Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will un-tape all of the wiring harness and really check it out throughly, and re-check the key switch. I guess a high resistance ground would cause an erradic spark action like that. I'll also call around to some local bike shops about the coil testing.

Have a good holiday weekend.

I had something similar, except mine quit running while it was hot because the wires that ran too close to the stinger melted and shorted out. Once I changed to some fresh plugs it would run only on one cylinder. Once I got the wires off of the pipe, and from each other it fired up on the first kick everytime.

banghead Got a nasty shock when I found the short btw.

My new coil came in today and after installing it I am back in two-stroke heaven. That familiar ring-ding is the sweetest sound after having trouble with this bike for the last few months. The Yamaha coil does not come with the plug boots though. One of mine is around 4.7K ohms but the other is near 15k so I am going to replace those in before the weekend.

Sure glad I got this fixed with the first replacement part...Thanks Turbo
