Hockey390 Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Son of a ***** Went to go start her up to keep her fresh since I havent started for a week. Kicked it a few times and nothing (choke out) put the choke in, TRIED to start.. So I said to myself.. Ok, after work I will put some SHOES on.. and try then Got home, went to start.. with choke out, tried to start once..put choke in, tried to start 2 times.. then I kicked it and it almost felt as if when i kicked it down, something other then a piston moved.. kinda sounds like if you take your mouse and hit it on the mousepad.. (had to hit things till i got a noise you all could make ) So now I'm like ok.. it sounds like its gonna start...but I dont want to kick it if its gonna do that.. So i kicked it again, made a normal noise.. kicked it again, normal tried to start a little.. kicked it again and that odd noise. SO There may have been less times of it "trying" to start, but I was flustered so ya.. Basically I just want to know what the hell that noise was. Hope it doesnt cost me more $$.. She normally starts up if she "tries" to start.. So I feel confident that it would have started in a few more kicks.. but I didnt want to risk kicking it if something wasnt right. Quote
bansheefreak Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 sure when you kicked it i wasn't the kick starter hitting the motor or something??? maybe something just was moved when you werekicking it getting all pissed off cus it did not just fire right up???? just trying to help here...i;m glad mine starts most of the time while sitting on it with one kick... reas11 Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 what does your lower end look like .. had a blowup receantly ? if u have i'd check the crank bearings . Quote
Hockey390 Posted June 22, 2004 Author Report Posted June 22, 2004 Ok, this is my recent happenings... Added Trinity 35mm single carb setup, went up to the next bore (.040), got a port & polish, and put on new silencers. I broke the engine in VERY nicely.. i feel that I broke it in more then enough.. Did countless heat cycles.. then ran a full tank of gas through it never exceeding 18 MPH (i have a speedometer) The powerband was never hit, and this use of a tank of gas was not one straight shot. it was used up slowly becuase I stopped and let it cool down completely every 30 mins. After I ran that tank (24:1) I let it idle for 45 mins non stop without revs or anything, just sat there. Then I started the next tank being fairly gentle. Drove it for about 15 mins (after a 10 minute warm-up @ idle) never really ripping on it.. maybe 1/2 to 2/3 throttle at most. Then I gave it to her. MY RIDE ENDED when my radiator hose came unhooked from the head. I had people standing right next to me because I was showing my bike to them, so they noticed it when it came unhooked. I saw smoke (within seconds of the unhook) and shut it off INSTANTLY. I just got home, hooked up the hose, tightened it down TIGHT put new anti-freeze in.. and thats where I am.. I will go check and see if I was hitting anything, but I dont think I was. There is nothing near my bike and the kicker went all the way down. I'm gonna get the clymers out tomarrow, i have the day off.. So any tips or things I should check I would appreciate GREATLY. Could it be anything in my kick starter? Just not gripping or something? It is an 87.. So shits old! I want to get this fixed up though, so I will start early tomarrow. As far as a crank bearing.. Whats the easiest way to get to that without taking something off that will need a new gasket or something when i put it back on? Quote
banshee0044 Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 hey check your flywheel key..if youve pulled the flywheel recently u many not have torqued it ack on enough..happened to me what happened was i put my timiing advancer on and didnt tighten the flywheel enough..then i did a little pwerslide and came all the way around and then whacked it...and the lfywheel nut backed off...thought i blew the motor...but when i took it apart it was the damn flywheel key...all i needed to fix it.. note that when i kicked it...it kinda sounded liek the mouse hitting the table haha Quote
itsaripper Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 With all that idle time you prollly have a shit load of carbon in there on the piston and the head. When you let it sit the humidity and time will loosen it up. When you cranked it over the carbon was in the squish area and made the smacking noise. Start it up slow again and warm up. Then take it out and do a couple of drag race runs and burn that carbon out. Only do that if you are sure the jetting is right. If when you start it and the smacking noise is there and your freeked. Take off the carb and the reeds and look in at the top of the pistons. To see if they are hitting the head or if there is carbon stuck on the piston hitten the head. Quote
Hockey390 Posted June 22, 2004 Author Report Posted June 22, 2004 Ya but I did ride on it hard AFTER I let it idle so long.. I ran a full tank of gas through it since. I just woke up, so its time to start on her.. I will keep you posted. ***If my jetting is off would that make it hard to start?*** Quote
Hockey390 Posted June 22, 2004 Author Report Posted June 22, 2004 I checked over the flywheel nut, tight as it should be.. so I figured I would kick it over and see if that sound came back.. Made sure I wasnt hitting anything, and boom.. started up 2nd kick. SO.... What we've learned here.. My banshee not only is insane... it has a mind of its own and can make funny noises when it wants too. Quote
itsaripper Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 I figured it out!!! That was your muffler bearing clunking Quote
frocashmoney24 Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 always gets ya wtih those muffler bearings , but yea how is your jetting by the way Quote
Hockey390 Posted June 23, 2004 Author Report Posted June 23, 2004 may sound like a complete newbie.. but, whats the muffler bearing? Jetting isnt right, havent had time to jet it.. every day I get off it rains Quote
boonman Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 You blew a colant hose off? THe only time I did that was when i blew a head gasket. Did you re-torquue everything down after heat cycles and riding? Just curious... ANyways, I don't know about the smacking sound. Could be a bad bearing in the lower end... Could be anything. I would guess bearing..... Idling shouldn't build up that much carbon. if it was, you would have fouled out long before that. how is the head gasket? Take the coolant cap off the radiator and start it. DO you get a faceful of coolant? If so, you have a blown head gasket. Quote
Hockey390 Posted June 24, 2004 Author Report Posted June 24, 2004 The hose just slipped off... only reason was because it wasnt tight. When I got home and put it back on I went and tightened down the other clamps, and i could get about 3-4 FULL turns out of each.. which if you get out a hose clamp and make 3 or even 2 full turns, watch how much it changes.. its ALOT. But I will do that, does the coolant have to be full to do this? and should I put on a mask just in case? I will check the torque on my head as well... I havnet re-torqued it since I ran full out. Quote
boonman Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 Well, when I blew my head gasket, I was building pressure in the cooling system like a mofo. I wanted to check to see if I had coolant, and after I did, I fired it up. (without the cap on) and I got blasted by a guiser of coolant. Kind of pissed me off. Quote
