splpete Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Ok guys I am new here and I am looking for some helpful info on my airbox. 1st, which is the better route - dual k&n filters or a single? Is there anyway to modify the actual "box"? I do run in a good amount of wet terrain. At the moment all I got is the stock filter in the box, lid on but funnel removed. Shee rips now but I know I can do a little tinkering and haul some more a$$. Any info would be helpful. Scott Quote
bigboybanshee Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 (edited) Welcome to the forums! I do a lot of similar riding and if I were you, I would NOT go with the K&N clamp ons, dual or single. Get a K&N drop in filter that goes in your airbox. If you're gonna go through any water I highly recommend keeping your airbox. Now, if you're only going through small puddles, etc then there is a mod you can do that helps increase airflow and keeps your filter protected. You can cut 1.5 inches off the back of the airbox lid(opposite end of the snorkel) and it lets your filter breathe a little more without completely exposing your filter to the elements. Hope this helps! Edited May 12, 2004 by bigboybanshee Quote
banshdog Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Bigboy is right on, do not use the slip ons if you are going through lots of water. I got an aftermarket air box with the single K&N filter. You could use you stock air box with a new filter and achieve the same thing. Quote
MILO Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 i can't say enough about my pro design adaptor with foam filter. no lid, riding in all conditions including muddy and wet poker runs in the rain. never had any problems yet. just keep those filters cleaned up. as long as your not in water over the airbox it should be fine, but remove the drain catch on the box just in case water does get in there, & it'll drain right out. MILO Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 by the way, when i just had the snorkel off, i covered the opening to the lid with some fine window screen to keep out the big stuff. also trimmed out the tunnel on the underside of the lid to allow instant air flow to the entire filter. had 12 uni-filters in the lid too. still doesn't compare to losing the lid all together! evil Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 and if you do want to ditch the lid completly you can go with a outerwear air box cover. it keeps the water out too. Quote
MotulMonsta Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 K&N's are junk filters...yeah they flow good, but they let dirt pass right through them. K&N's are only good when your running in the dry desert with outer wears over them. Other then that..you'll be screwing yourself in the end. The best filter setup out there is the pro-design pro flow kit. It has a massive 2 piece filter assembly that bar none puts every other filter to shame. I ran a uni filter for a while and like my shit assed k&N, I noticed specs of dirt inside my carbs..not good. I also ran a 250r style aluminum airbox setup..it's junk as well. That pro flow filter is so fucking massive that dirt is never going to find a way through it. Me, I'll suffer a little performance loss due to minor intake restriction then risk a costly engine meltdown due to dirt inhalation. Quote
rebelbanshee2 Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 I highly reccomend the Pro design flange, the stock etup is junk. I too am a fan of foam filters. I say get the PD with the foam filter, ditch the lid and run one of those outerware lid covers. Quote
splpete Posted May 13, 2004 Author Report Posted May 13, 2004 Thanks guys for all the attention and info I am not positive on the direction I am going to go as of this moment but I will let ya'll know. I am sure I'll have a few more questions for ya down the line. Thanks again Quote
banshdog Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 If you decide to ditch the box and go with 2 k&n's, I will sell you the ones i have with new outerwears for $50 shipped. Quote
