azza02shee Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 I'm trying to decide whether or not to split the cases on my banshee and was after some opinions. I'll start from the start. Had a nasty crash about a month ago, did a fair bit of damage to the bike. On of the things that broke was the kick starter. Somehow it engaged, due to the impact, while the engine was still running. When this happened the gear on the back of the clutch basket was smashed off, split in two, and a tooth was broken off the kick start engagement gear. Kick start idler is ok. I removed the clutch cover and found the smashed gear and missing tooth, they seem to have broken off fairly cleanly. However, i'm worried that the gearbox has been damaged. I can select all gears (engine off) and there doesn't seem to be any strange sounds coming from it. The only thing I noticed that seemed strange was the amount of backlash between the two gearbox shafts whilst in first gear, its nearly a 1/4 turn. I realise that some backlash is normal between the engagement tangs on the gears but the other gears seem to have about 1/2 as much backlash. If 1st gear is damaged then it doesnt make much sense as I was in fourth when I came unstuck The cross section of the gear that smashed isn't much and its only cast so I can't see how it could have done much damage. Please help Quote
azza02shee Posted May 5, 2004 Author Report Posted May 5, 2004 Anyone? Is this backlash normal? Quote
frocashmoney24 Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 i wouldent split it, i'd put in the new shit on clutch side, and ride it and see how it is, then if its bad it saved u alot of time splittin it for nothing, but thats just me Quote
rebelbanshee2 Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 i say ride it. if its broken youll know. Its not like you can break it more by riding it if its broken? Quote
reas11 Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 i doubt it .. i agree ride it u will know if somethings wrong .. buy yourself a kicker gear nyuk might have one .. Quote
azza02shee Posted May 6, 2004 Author Report Posted May 6, 2004 Thanks guys, A good whippin will sort it out. Does anyone know why 1st gear has more backlash than the others though? Should it have? Quote
jinx44 Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 The hole that the dogs go into for first gear are larger than the holes for the other gears. This lets it move more before the dogs hit the gear (if that makes sense). Every gear but first has three dogs that engage into 6 "holes". First has three dogs and only three holes. Quote
azza02shee Posted May 6, 2004 Author Report Posted May 6, 2004 Thanks jinxx, That makes sense, the backlash is about 75-80 degrees which would allow for the width of the dog. If it aint broke, dont fix it Quote
