the motor oil wont cause your tranny to break unless your oil level is really low and the gears get really hot. but if you running the tranny low on oil it will damage it no matter what kind of oil you put in it. it is ok to run regular car oil as long as it doesnt contain any friction modifires or is labeled energy conserving because it can cause your clutch to slip. castrol GTX20w-50 is an example of a good car oil that you can run. also automatic transmission fulid type F is really good to run. its also known as ATF type F

I am running motor oil in the tranny...penzoil...do i need to run gear oil...will it not break then

Depending on how old your motor is and how much power you put out the cases could need replacement. What happens is the races where the tranny bearings are held get stretched out and oblonged. When you hit the gas eventually the gears are just transfering power through the tips of the gear teeth. I would check the gears for play when the motor is apart. I also like heavier weight gear oil apposed to motor oil for the transmission. Would you put motor oil in the transmission of your truck? Maybe it's just me... but I wouldn't

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. :D No offense, I'm just kind of a smart arse at times. :jesterlaugh:

No problem, I found it funny myself. You have to be able to laugh at yourself once in a while.....
