Chase5712 Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 well the other day i call up the machine shop and ask them how much to bore the cylinders so they tell me 40 a hole ok thats the cheapest around here so i tell them i already got the piston i want in there because they would most likely over charge me for them. and they said ok well bring it up here and we can mic them and bore it for ya so i take my cylinders off the shee and take them up there 2 days later and then they tell me they wont bore them unless i buy the piston from them WTF!!! so does any body know a good place i good send them to. also i bought a new head gasket a couple months ago and was gonna put it on but decided to save it for the rebuild. well they tell me i have to buy a over sive head gasket to match the bore which sounds like it makes since but do i need to buy another if i go .020 over and i also heard something about when u bore the piston u have to do some thing to the intake or exhuast port so it wont hit the piston. thanx Quote

Otherwise they are just trying to screw you. I haven't heard about needing an oversize headgasket, i've been using o-rings for a few years. It's a good idea to chamfer the intake and exhaust port so they won't catch the edge of a piston ring and shatter them. Most places will charge you $40 a hole to bore. Make sure those pistons you have are ok and send them with the cylinder. Quote
checkster Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 2 days later and then they tell me they wont bore them unless i buy the piston from them WTF!!! never heard of such a thing. I get my stuff and go somewhere else. they are a machine shop, not a parts store. check Quote
frocashmoney24 Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 yea arae you sure they werent telling you that' u'd need to buy bigger pistons because they would have to go a bigger bore to get scratches out? and no you just get a normal head gasket and it'll work Quote
brock_fuzzy_69 Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 yeah lots of shops charge extra if you buy the parts elsewhere i think its 45 a hole here locally and that includes a nicely donw chamfer on all the ports i forget how much extra he charges for all those guys that buy there stuff elsewhere and bring it to him but hey i can see there point in wanting to do as much of the work as they can its a business Quote
checkster Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 well maybe its just me. but my machine shop only does machine work. 25 per hole and he doesnt care where the hell you bought the parts. i do have to chamfer my own ports though......no biggie. check Quote
brugal Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 Machine shops can be a problem at times. A few people on here recomend Passion Racing ,hes on here all the time. When I tear the she down I plan on sending my stuff to them. And you should be fine with those gaskets... Quote
erbilabuc Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 I paid 45$ a hole and brought my own shiet. Quote
MotulMonsta Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 The bikeshop I go to only charges me labor if I bring my own parts. 45 bones per cylinder. Any good bussiness should do the same. Porting polishing, milling isn't required nor an oversized head gasket. So long as your bore is any where from .20 to 1.o over stock. Anything larger then yes you'll need to run aftermarket sleeves and or cylinders with the appropriate hdwr like gaskets and pistons. Any reputable bikeshop can do the work. Quote
