Cannon Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 I had a bad Banshee experiance today. Practicing second gear drag starts. All was fine, made a couple of 300 ft. passes, just had got off the gas and Banshee died like I hit the kill switch. Would not fire, I do hear a grinding type noise as I slowly hand push the kicker over. I pulled the head off, piston tops look good, cyclinder walls, very smooth. Motor will turn over but somethings definetly wrong. I did a search here on cranks separating, read about 25 or so posts about it. This may be what happened, I don't know yet. I understand about them coming apart and how having them true / welded is worth doing. Does this sound like what happened to mine and why would it shut down like it did? Sure is a sickening sound. I got some work ahead of me. What do you think I did? Help! It is an 03' Banshee low hrs. maybe 40 - my basic mods are: T5's - Noss head 20cc domes - V-Force reeds - RS timing plate @ +4 advance - 4" swingarm extension - no air box K&N pods - 380 mains - TOR's Kit - Run 32:1 Klotz red - 93 pump gas. - No porting done - stock unwelded crank (you probably figured) Better get your crank insurance, I should have. frocashmoney24 Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 it might be, or maybe a bearing failure? split the cases and see what you have Quote
boonman Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 TO check for ceank seperation, you don't have to split the case. Pull the cylinders off, and take the pistons off the rods. Check for excessive side clearance(s) and/or crank web rubbing on the case. It could be any number of things. You could have slipped a ring off, cracked a skirt, melted the top end down due to an air leak. What elevation are you at? You noted 20cc domes. You could have detonated and blown a hole in the piston. You could have an air leak and sucked air and melted the exhaust side of the piston. What is the compression on this thing now? If it doesn't run, something is wrong. Also, the crank could have started to seperate and twist. This would have threw the timing off and it could detonate that way as well.... A few things to ccheck here. elevation, compression, and a leakdown test. Look before you even crack a bolt on that motor. Especially a leakdown. Diagnose the problem before you even go inside.... Nighty Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Boonman, Since he says the tops look good and the sidewalls are smooth aswell, i'm more leaning to something like a lose flywheel or a twisted +4 key? or he ran out of gas Quote
Nighty Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 just had got off the gas and Banshee died Or the tors unit went OR one of the carb slides is stuck. Still have the tors on it? Your sig says tors kit.. must be removed then? Quote
2004LEBanshee Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 When my flywheel came off it died and made a grinding noise also when it came to a stop and when I kicked it over. Look into that. Quote
BitchenBanshee Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Yup!! My flywheel made the same type of sound. It came off of the crank and I thought my crank went!! Instead it just chewed up the keyway!! Quote
lincster Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 With 20cc domes, depending on your elevation, you might want to consider 50/50 race/pump gas. Do a compression check for sure to check. I have the same domes and run 50/50. Might be overkill, but I don't mind. Plus it smells good. Quote
Cannon Posted March 2, 2004 Author Report Posted March 2, 2004 Hey guys, My stator coil had two screws come out of it. It got into the flywheel a little. I used blue lock tight, don't know why they came out. The stator wrap didn't get hit much at all it may be OK. If it's not I just have to get a new one. I glad it wasn't the crank, still going to have it trued & welded. Thank you all for your reply's In my time of sorrow! It will be back screamin' soon I hope, instead of crying. You all are sure nice to help. Cannon Quote
Meat Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 got yor pm very late last night, glad you figured it out. I just wanna add that when you guys are WOT for a good period of time, or drag racing run after run. You should never go from WOT to a completly closed throttle. You need to keep a supply of cool gas\oil into your hot cylinders. When your riding wide open throttle you build alot of heat, the gas\oil mix is the only thing cooling down and lubricating your top end. You need to keep that fuel coming into the topend to help her cool down. Never make 10 drag passes and come to a complete stop\shut down the engine. You should ride it around 1\2 throttle to keep that cool fuel flowin' and of course the airflow benifits on the radiator. Quote
