sredish Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Turned on my laptop this morning, checked email, checked BHQ, did a couple things and left, like I always do. Come back around lunch to check a few things out. The screen is black, nothing there. Ok hit the restart button and wait for it to load. Meanwhile, I jump on this computer (the desktop in the house) and do the things I was wanting to do. I check back at the laptop. Well, it won't boot up. After trying to boot for about twenty minutes, it states blah blablah file is corrupt, needs to be repaired or reinstalled. How am I going to reinstall the file if I can't boot up. Well, I pull out the xp disc and boot up in the repair mode. this file has two copies on the hard drive. i go in with dos and copy one over to the file it said was corrupted and overwrite. Sweet, now we're cooking. Restart. Damn, now another file is corrupted, don't know how to fix that one. Guess I'm going to have to just reinstall the os. What you guys think? I guess maybe a virus attacked. The laptop is networked to the host desktop and both computers have more damn security than George Bush, don't know how it would have come through, especially through the host's security then mine. Don't know what the f happened, I just need my computer for work. ASAP. Later. Quote
sweetshee4312 Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 is there a recovery disk for the thing, you can do that, and u get all ur facotry setttings Quote
locogato11283 Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 i have direcway satellite internet and they shut my internet off the other day due to a virus. they said there are alot of new viruses out right now. make sure you have a good virus scan program. Quote
frocashmoney24 Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 yea these damn virus's are getting harder and harder to block, ever checked how many your computer has blocked, my new comps only 4 months old and has blocked over 1000 Quote
sredish Posted February 26, 2004 Author Report Posted February 26, 2004 i tried the disc recovery and fixed one file. it still won't start claiming a different file is now corrupt. I couldn't seem to get that one fixed. I may just reinstall the danm os here today. I have Norton Internet Security and Antivirus on the laptop and the desktop its networked through. Seems to work pretty good, but we do get the messages that a virus has been blocked though. I also have direcway internet. Quote
efward Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Could just be a bad sector on the drive. It happens. A format will identify and block access to bad sectors on the disk. Quote
Banshee33 Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Efward, Dude that is a cool avatar. Where did you get that . Quote

sredish Posted February 28, 2004 Author Report Posted February 28, 2004 Thanks. Not sure where I got the pic for my avatar. I used to do web development so I have a collection of animated gifs. sredish. did you ever get this worked out? nope. i ran the os disk and repaired one file and now its another and can't get it fixed. i tried the automated system recovery but don't have a floppy to use for the info, and it won't work without it seems. i said f it and tried to reinstall the os and can't even do that, guess I can't figure out how. When I did, all it wanted to do is install a second os, and that's not what I want to do. I need this thing up, I need files like right now, for work. I don't know. I was going to try to take it somewhere, but couldn't. It's just a f'ed up situation. Quote
efward Posted March 3, 2004 Report Posted March 3, 2004 You may want to consider that second OS as an interim solution. If you install any workable OS that will boot up, you can network the box, copy off what you need and then format the thing before reinstalling the OS. Quote

I'm letting a bud do the reformat and reinstall thing. I'm sick of dicking with it. I couldn't get the thing repaired, so he's going in and putting on a second os, pulling all the shit off onto his external hd, formatting and then reinstalling everything. Hey, I really appreciate your input and I'll let you know how it ends up. Quote
