HA! The best way to start on the street is with a CHEAP, USED 250-600 bike. Did I mention CHEAP? Because you will want to sell it in a year after you buy it new. Believe me, I know, been there many times.

But, you should fully explore all you can with a little engine on the street so that you don't get lured into trouble by a superbike at first. Just try to save money and don't (it's very hard not to) fall in love with your first bike and overspend on it. With that said, good luck on the purchase and DEFINATELY START riding on the street...it is awesome!

Remember, the defensive approach will bring you more joy in the long run because you will not get hurt. Be a wimp, don't pass and get the SKILLS up real good. Then, buy a superbike and pass everything in site........(when safe) ;)

I think you should buy my '01 GSXR750, fast, beautiful, light, great gas mileage, cheaper insurance then the 900's and 1000's... :D

Go to a shop and just look around, check out the used bikes too. You can find some good used ones for cheap$. I bought a Ninja ZX-9 2 yrs ago from a friend for under $6,000 including helmet, jacket, and chrome wheels and the bike only had 472mi. on it! I love it but if you are getting back into streetbikes after not riding for awhile and just for transportation, I would look at the Suzuki Bandit 600, Yamaha FZ6 for starters. It depends on the budget, but don't get anything less than a 500-600cc or I think you will regret it. It doesn't have to be a fast bike, but you will want a little power to get you out of some situations on the road. And they will last longer since they don't have to work as hard. Happy hunting! P.S. State Farm has very reasonable rates for bikes if you have a good driving record, mine is less than $450 a yr. for full coverage.

heres the best advice.don't do it.i did and came close to dyein 3 or 4 times.

I'm sorry to hear that you came close that many times. I myself have had much more experience in the face of danger and possibly death. Like dragging knee on the freeway, (yes, idiotic, but what a rush) and hitting a squirrel. Oops. Anyways, some here speak from experience, and some speak from "heresay". Well, here's what I have to say being that I have actually RIDDEN all the bikes in question. The 250, shouldn't be ridden by anyone who has had experience in riding any sort of motorized transportation. it is wayyyyyy too light for transportation, and you will hate life on a ride to work on a mild day with a light wind. You will get blown all over the place. I have owned a Ninja 500. it was my first bike. Excellent transportation. I sold it in 2 months. Took me a week to realize the error in my ways. A little heavier and more solid than the 250, but still underpowered. I then bought a Katana (can-a-tuna) 600. HAd a Yoshi pipe and new rubber for $2200. Had 2400 miles on it. Rode that for a couple years. Enjoyed the hell out of it. I put an air shifter on it, and just plain had fun. Sold it for more than I paid for it. :) Then bought a Ninja ZX-7R. Rode that for a few years, watched friends die, lots of friends take headers in front of me, behind me, wherever. Flip over concrete barriers and get whacked head on by the car(s) in the other lane. Pretty much been there and seen quite a bit. Never been down myself, and I sold my bike, and kept it that way. I can tell you this. You need to decide what you want to do here. you want transportation to and from work. So, do you want to be comfortable? Or do you want performance. Because a rocket isn't the comfiest of rides. The magna you mentioned is an awesome bike. How about a V-max? Insane power. Not the greatest handler, but good bike... I would not go with anythign less than a 600. If you do, you will soon find out why... And if you purchase a rocket, every day to work will be an enjoyable one, and you will take the long way home..........
