J-Madd Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 I recently bought a'99. Someone had put a twist throttle on it and removed the TORS. They placed idle screws on the stock carbs. I don't think it has been jetted. but it has a K&N. It had been using Klotz @32:1; I drained it and started MC1 40:1 and removed the snorkel and drilled the airbox lid. It helped some, but did not correct the problem. It runs rich (richer in left cylinder). My brand new plugs are black and oil covered. Thanks for any help, J-Madd Quote
cgamla Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 The first thing I would do is clean the carbs and check the float heights. Then make sure they are synched so you have a good base line to start jetting from. Also check to make sure your getting enough fuel flow throught the petcock and filter if installed. Also get some new plugs so you get a good read. 40 :1 should be fine just stick with it once you decide on your ratio Quote
Banchetta Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 Ratio sounds good, I agree w/ cgamla, pull the carbs and clean them w/ an air compressor thoroughly....Adjust float height and see what size jets you have....then give us a list of mods and jetting you have... Quote
spoin39 Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 If it still runs bad after the carb cleaning, check the compression, I would guess you need to freshen up the engine. Quote
J-Madd Posted January 20, 2004 Author Report Posted January 20, 2004 Thanks everyone. I'm going to clean the carbs and check the floats when I install my Rad Valve and Power Reeds. I also have some Wiseco Pistons ordered and plan to bore it 20 over. Like another recent post, mine too leaks tons of fuel out of the carb overflow tubes, even if the gas valve is turned off. (Of course this is probably fuel left in the gas lines after I turn the gas off, It just takes a while to leak through the hoses.) Even with the gas left on, It shouldn't leak fuel through the overflow tubes (should it?)..stuck floats? Other bikes I have had haven't had this problem. Quote

J-Madd Posted February 1, 2004 Author Report Posted February 1, 2004 I've got the sputtering problem fixed. The slides were in the wrong carbs. It was like that when I got it. I switched 'em and all is good. Quote
Mr.Giggles Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 Oh yea I've been there and done that, that caught me on the 87 when I bought it J-Madd Quote
