Hey all-

I'm looking for a CHEAP trailer. I say cheap cause it's gotta haul 4 quads. I've been thinking about building my own, but a friend of mine suggested some co. (I can't remember their name) that sold build-it-yourself trailers really cheap. Anyone ever heard of these? I can't find anything anywhere...Also, if anyone has built their own recently, can I ask what parts you've used and where you bought them inexpensively?

Thanks in advance for all the info.!

check out www.carsontrailer.com they have stuff that ranges from 275.00 to $$$$$ the one i have has the side rail lowered and can hole 6 if you stand them up, tire to tire, or 3 sideways, its pretty versitile. stay away from those home depot ones with the small tires, seen to many friends loose a tire on those and it was pretty ugly  and when you say cheap, whats cheap ? mine was 1071.00 bucks out the door, to me its cheap. fa521eed.jpg

Around here, I can get 16' car haulers for around $1700. 18' is $1900. Flat deck, minor beavertail, and diamondplate. My trailer is a 6x10 landscaper, wood deck, 1' high surround, and hauls 3 shees. Once we hauled 3 shees, a Rubicon Honda, full size truck toolbox, and 40 gallons of fuel and a couple coolers on the trailer. We were in a pinch, and had to make the line at Silver Lake......

YOU CAN GET A 16' CAR HALUER OFF EBAY FOR 795.00. I PAID 200 FOR A POS TRAILER AND "REBUILT" IT MY SELF. ITS 5X8' (BARLY LARGE ENOUGH FOR 2 QUADS)

Not too bad, but the trailer(s) that I am speaking of are completely flat deck. None of them cheesy flimsy 18 guage fender models. Them ain't bad looking though. And also note the pine deck. The one I can get locally has all diamond plate bed. And a 2 5/16" ball as well.... I may look into one for a longer utility trailer.

EDIT:

Just did some looking around on these guys. That is a base price for that trailer. For electric brakes, it is 110 bones per axle, plus another $20 for the wiring plug adapter to be added, (What a joke, them things cost about $3.00), plus $50 for ramps, $325 for 4 new 6 ply tires and rims, (as the trailers come with four "complimentary" used tires which "still have some tread left, but may not be very good"), and $55 for the beavertail which are all included with the local trailer. So, after I add up all this, I get $560 extra on top of the "base" price. SO, that coupled with the $725 price tag for the base price, I come up with $1285. And it still has a pine deck. Oh yea, $30 for the spare tire mount. So, $1315 for this trailer, and whatever it would cost me to drive my ass to Kentucky, and then come back and register the bitch. Not worth it IMHO. And anything hauling that much weight needs trailer brakes. I don't care WTF anyone says. I have towed alot of shit. And when you need to stop, and you don't have trailer brakes, it can be difficult and cause accidents.

xelerated asked about a cheap trailer, that one looked cheap to me.

the trailer weighs about 1,600lbs add 4 quads (1,600lbs) thats about 3,200lbs. Thats borderline if you need trailer brakes, and even if you did would you need them on both axels? One axel would be plunty. so add 140, 725+130=855

and a bever tail? who gives a shit about that? also it says it comes with free ramps and a free spare tire in the auction. Also a pine deck should be fine hauling quads.

for a cheap "quad hauling trailer" this one seems like the best choice to me, since its about half of the "16' car haulers for around $1700" boonman was talking about.

I still dont know if its worth a trip to KY

I'm not a trailer expert by any means but this seems like an alright deal.

I do. Ever haul anything remotely large? Anything low to the ground? Also, the auction states that it gives a free USED spare tire. USED. Know what that means? Did you lok at their site? They get junk tires to sell with the trailer. So, you have to factor in the cost of 4 new tires, and a new spare, unless you want to trust a used POS one. I know I wouldn't want to trust it. And at 3,000#, or close to it, you shouldn't need trailer brakes. However, they always make things alittle easier. And one axle with brakes would be plenty for a quad trailer. However, I know that trailers get over loaded SEVERELY. Unsafe practice.

I built my own. I sold it for a measly $500 last year though. It was built to haul 3 quads, so it wasn't super heavy duty. It had 3" square .250 wall tube the entire length (14') for a back bone, and the deck frame was heavy wall 2" (about .125 or so) square welded onto that, then the 2 foot tall sides were made from light wall 2" square. It weighed about 350 lbs or so from what I could tell (I guessed by grabbing on and trap shrugging it) I had a 3500# axle underneath and some pizza cutter tires. I also made the tounge about 4 feet long. Made it back up so easy.

My next one is going to be bought. I need an enclosed car hauler with a beaver tail etc etc

Whether you need brakes or not is determined by the state you live in. Here in Ohio anything over 2000 loaded weight is required to have brakes. It's better to be safe than sorry. Also Even if your state has a higher load limit, the states you travel through can still enforce their law if it is lower.

I have found my states DMV page before, but I've lost it. It had some good information, although it didn't answer all my questions.

I found that I had to register my trailer if it weighed over 700lbs dry. I had to have 1" of tire width for every 4-5 hundred pounds and trailer brakes at whatever they say I have to have them at.

Its always a good idea to search out your states DMV page to find what regulations are required.

This is true. And when trailering, You had better be within spec, or when they "DOT" your ass, you will be a sitting duck untill you rectify the situation. they will NOT let an unsafe load continue down the road.
