Crankshaft Oil Seal

Is it OK or is it recommended to install the new oil seal behind the front sprocket without splitting the case? 

 I didn't see anything in my Clymers about this, just tells me where it is located...

I heard both yes and no's.... Im hoping to get a professional answer.

FYI, I am not looking for a temporary fix I want to do it right.

Yes, pull it out, clean area, put new one in.

maybe put a small balloon over the shift shaft splines to protect the new seal when sliding it over the splines.

i am replacing front sprocket too, should i also change the bearing, collar & circlip 1 ? (30, 31 & 32)

or is the bearing not something i can change without opening it up??

You have to split the cases to change the bearing.

I've never done it, but it should be possible to change the oil seal without splitting the cases.

Chances are that if you have an oil leak, it is the neutral switch cover.

On the other hand of it is the oil seal, you might as well split the cases and change all the seals.

Yes easy to do while still in the bike. No need to put anything over the splines as the od of the shaft is alot smaller than the id of the seal to accept the collar. I would replace the collar also cause that usually gets grooves worn in it from the seal, causing the leak. Bearing on the other hand you would have to split the cases.

I have the original collar on mine and it's an 89. I think I reversed it and the groove does not ride in that oil seal lip. The seal can be installed without pulling motor. Seal does not have a lip around the outside of it so it slides right on in.

OK cool, What type of grease? if any do i put on the oil seal, collar & sprocket while installing the new one?
