draggins10 Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 So I broke one of the springs on my works shock and ordered a replacement spring. Can anyone tell me how to compress the new spring in order to get it on. I know I can rent a spring compressor from autozone but I think it might be too big. Quote
draggins10 Posted August 14, 2014 Author Report Posted August 14, 2014 Bump...getting the springs today, any advice? Quote
Glenyboy Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 I've hear of people compressing the spring, then using a bunch of thick zip ties to hold it down Quote
trickedcarbine Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 ^ no no no no no no no no no! Never bank on a zip tie holding a spring. Bad idea all around, even multiple zip ties. Quote
Pastrykiller Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 You can compress them with your hands. A second set of hands will come in "handy" to remove the collar on the bottom of the shock. Quote

Im gonna go try autozone now and if that doesn't work ill hit up the gym and try with my hands again Quote
Pastrykiller Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 It can be done. Just did it to a set of works with dual rate springs. You're going to find out that the spring compressors from auto stores will have jaws that are too thick to put into the springs. You might find a good set but I was unable to. Resorted to the vice and man card. 1 Quote
possum Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 there is atv spring compressors on ebay for like 35 i think. I bought mine a few years ago. used it many times. works flawlessly on any quad spring. even real stiff rear springs. Only way to do it, makes it easy Quote

draggins10 Posted August 14, 2014 Author Report Posted August 14, 2014 ^ thanks, that seems to be my only option. I tried autozone, advanced auto, harbor freight and a local motorcycle shop. No dice. Looks like the Banshee is staying home this weekend Quote
trickedcarbine Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 You could probably make a compressor with two metal plates shaped like a C, and some lag bolts. Quote
Glenyboy Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 Take them to a garage, they should do it for lunch money Quote
