rebelbanshee2 Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 im trying to remove the scews that hold the shift drum it. I heated it with MAPP gas and tried but they wont budge..is a gas hotter than MAPP gas needed? i need to get these F'ers out! Quote
chase73 Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 I believe that those screws are philips head correct ? if so use a impact screwdriver the kind you can get at the auto store or sears for 20 bucks great addition to tool box. You hit it with a hammer and it impacts it out ussally works 99% of the time Quote
Basicorpse Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 I had to slap a pair of vice grips on mine. Took about 10 mins but they finally came out. After I got them out I replaced them with stainless allen head bolt. Quote
Justintoxicated Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 on of mine was loged in there too, I used a pair of channel locks to get it out. replaced with alen head screws also. Quote
Stylemaster Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 impact screwdriver its a must for the yamaha toolbox for the single reason that they love to use crappy screws that strip easy and because they use steel screws on aluminum and overtighten them steel bites into aluminum hard. or you can use the poormans impact screwdriver just hit a regular screwdriver with a hammer while you put some pressure turning it and it usually works this is how i got my side case screws out. stupid phillips heads... boonman Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Impact screwdriver is the thing to have!!!!!!!!!! I love mine., Sits in the top drawer !!!! Quote
SICK BOY Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 I go with the rest of them and say buy a impact driver. You can also try useing a die grinder to make a straight slot and use a standard screw driver.A standard bit is less likley to strip compared to a philips. Quote
Hiram Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 The cutting a slot works great, I done it before but don't reuse the screws. Quote
Justintoxicated Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 I just grabbed the tip of the head of the screw with channel locks and turned it like a wrench heard a SNAP though, tossed the screw in the trash and replaced it with an allen set. All else fails give it a shot jsut make sure you clap it on tight. Quote
rebelbanshee2 Posted November 13, 2003 Author Report Posted November 13, 2003 ok im buying one, thanks! Quote
Justintoxicated Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 is that the screw driver with the thick round metal handle..I think I have the handle and no bits heh but the channel lock thing worked for me this time. Quote
lian Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 impact driver one of the best things i bought otherwise i would strip alot of screws Quote
H300F Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 The shift drum screws are resessed so you cant get anything on the outside. I took mine out 2 days ago and was having the same trouble, one came out 1 didnt. Went to look for my impact but found a screwdrivr with a real big head. Worked real nice to my surprise, Yamahas bolts suck, they are probably laughing at us because they know that when we try to take out any screw it turns into a damn project, especially when you want to ride. Then some of their sizes and pitches..... its hard to just find a replacement bolt for some of them like the wheels are m12 i think with a 1.25 pitch, i can only find regular nuts in my hardware store not serrated. rebelbanshee2 Posted November 14, 2003 Author Report Posted November 14, 2003 gee wiz those screws suck! i think every screw on the bike i have either had to spin with a chizel or use vice grips...i guess we beat them in WWII and now they get to laugh at us Quote
MULLET~BOY Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 yeah no shit there getting back at us lol Quote
