what cause these to happen

The flywheel taper and crank taper are usually slightly different causing poor surface mating. what you see is galling from the flywheel slightly wobbling. remove you key. get valve grinding compound and lap the flywheel to the snout. then clean residue reinstall key and reassemble. should be fine

I think he's talking about flywheels NOT coming off.

(The flywheels are known to "bond" to the billet cranks for some reason.)

Grease on a flywheel?

You know the key's job isn't to hold the flywheel right?

Better to try a coating of blue locktite......

m67......they don't just stick to the taper.......we've seen severe cases where its even pulled out quite large chuncks out of the taper on the crank.  There have been quite a few guys on here who have discovered this.  They've all tried the lapping of the tapered ends to get them to seat correctly......doesn't work.
