Jereme6655 Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 there's been speculation.......but no real definitive answers. Quote
m671054 Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 The flywheel taper and crank taper are usually slightly different causing poor surface mating. what you see is galling from the flywheel slightly wobbling. remove you key. get valve grinding compound and lap the flywheel to the snout. then clean residue reinstall key and reassemble. should be fine Quote
WINDYCITYJOHN400 Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 I think he's talking about flywheels NOT coming off. (The flywheels are known to "bond" to the billet cranks for some reason.) Quote
skywalker7374 Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Use a synthetic grease when you put it back on and see if that helps next time around. Quote
WINDYCITYJOHN400 Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Grease on a flywheel? You know the key's job isn't to hold the flywheel right? Quote
WINDYCITYJOHN400 Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Better to try a coating of blue locktite...... Quote
SKEETR Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Yea. I did the grease method on a kx500 back in the day. Key sheared instantly Quote
Jereme6655 Posted July 3, 2013 Report Posted July 3, 2013 m67......they don't just stick to the taper.......we've seen severe cases where its even pulled out quite large chuncks out of the taper on the crank. There have been quite a few guys on here who have discovered this. They've all tried the lapping of the tapered ends to get them to seat correctly......doesn't work. Quote
