you will just have to drain it and remove the side cover, I think if I remember right you will have to remove the foot pegs and stuff first

 

id assume the spring in the kicker its self

Okay now I'm confused. Did you change anything other then the kicker?? You say your not sure if you need a new gear, I've only seen them break when the idler gear breaks or you have a violent kick back

Tilt it on its side. (just prop the clutch side of the bike about 18", don't drain the fluid). Pull the coolant lines and plug them (coolant loss should be minimal). Pull the cover off and check it out. The engagement is very simple and you should quickly be able to tell what is or isn't going on with the kicker assembly.
