band1t Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 Hey all, I have been sent here by the guys from thumpertalk they say here is the place to get all my question answered. I have a 05 Banshee project going on. So here is my first question which and probably a common one. I am going to have the frame powder coated, But the stem bearing doesn't want to come out and I am wondering since its not a high speed bearing if we mask it off would it survive the 500+ degree oven?? thanks Quote
emtbanshee Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 Did you unscrew the large retaining nut under the seal? Quote
Phelps Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 it should survive. don't you mean 350-400 degree temps? not many powders require more than 400 and that's just for 20 minutes. Quote
old put-put Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Did you unscrew the large retaining nut under the seal? If you don't have the tool take a 3/4 nut (bolt size) and use 1-1/8 socket to pull the retainer out then the bearing will come out the top side easily. Quote
fappy'97 Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 I would be more concerned about blasting media in the bearing than powder... Quote
old put-put Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 I would be more concerned about blasting media in the bearing than powder... Take the beraring out, and there will be no sand or powder in the bearing!! Quote
Starwriter Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Take the bearing and seals out and replace them. It's only $15 for the bearing and both seals. They do go bad. And if you don't want to look like an idiot, cut the unused brackets off the frame. Here's the tool I use to remove the bearing retainer. Some people take a bolt and jamb 2 nuts together on the bolt and then use a wrench or socket. Quote
Rustynail Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 some put an illustrated how to on this Quote
Starwriter Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Pry upper and lower seals out with screwdriver. Use your tool of choice to unscrew bearing retainer out counterclockwise. Pound bearing upwards from the bottom. Quote
